RAC Port Klang Centennial 5th Installation (Theme: Tribute To King of Pop) & Fundraising Dinner

August 15th 2009 marks another important chapter for members of Rotaract Club Port Klang Centennial. It is our 5th club installation.

Yes, we are FIVE years old. Indeed, I have seen changes in the club's growth as a chartered member. The changes were like waves. I had seen the peaks to the troughs.

Also, the event is also to install our club's 5th president, Nanthini Kumar (pic right above), my fellow comrade, a chartered member like myself. Also, the 2nd lady or woman President after me.

Uniquely, our club's installation theme nite was Coats & Jackets as Tribute to the late Michael Jackson, King of Pop.

All members participated in full force smart attire at Govinds Restaurant, Klang. The crowd began making their grand entrance at 8pm. This marks the gathering of our old friends and also new friends fellowship.

Dinner menu was the restaurant's authentic mouth watering Indian breads, curries, rice and spices.

The installation of new board was done by IPP Jia Thiam (I believe breathing sigh of relief) to new President Nanthini. Also IPP Jia Thiam who gave three awards to club members including the Best Rotaractor of the Term Award to Lee Leong King and Chew Way Wen who is the Best Recruiter Award.

And what was so startling this year for the fund raising event for Rotary Foundation was our own club's "Tiger Show" performed by our two club's aspiring stars, G&G (Gary & Gun).

Also, the club members sang the inspiring 'Heal The World' by MJ with fellow Rotarians & friends.

All in all, the clubs successfully fulfilled the fundraising amount of Rm2056 with wine/liquer dutch auction. All for good cause.

A big thank you to our members and OC Richie Lee & installation team, to our supportive President Patrick& Rotarians and Rotaract friends from district who contributed generously for the event.

Dear friends,

Welcome to the new Rotaract term 2009/2010!

We will have our very first meeting tomorrow Thursday (02/07/2009) at 8.00pm. Venue is at Red Island Café, Bkt Tinggi. (Across the road from Pelita Nasi Kandar)

I hope all dear Rotaractors and respective Rotarians can be present. Guests are welcome too. There won’t be any guest speaker for the evening, thus

I want to discuss on 3 things;

1) I would like to have a brief proposal from my Director’s on your future projects.
2) Updates from the Installation Night’s Organizing Committee.
3) Since there are some discontents on the theme proposed (Occupational) for the Installation Night, I would like to finalize it on this meeting itself.

So, I need everyone’s help to think of a better theme. Please revert on your attendance.

For the SAA (Sergeant at Arms) part, I would want to do it in an alphabetic manner. This means, we shall start with our Rtr.Chew Way Wen followed by Rtr.Gun Chin Yong on the next meeting and so on.

We are also going to have a new member inducted into our family of Rac Port Klang Centennial on the same day. It’s non other than Elizabeth!

I’m hoping for an awesome term with all of you. Here’s a saying for you’ll, “Friends are like puzzle pieces.

If one goes away, that special piece can never be replaced and that puzzle will never be whole again”. Same goes to us, I can’t afford to loose any one of you.

I sincerely need all of you to assist me throughout the way.

Dear fellow members,

My term as a President is almost ending. Is been a long journey ever since I took up the post till today, but it was a wonderful one. Throughout the journey, I have learned many new things and have made many new friends. Though my journey as a President can be at times rough, but it has made me into a stronger person. I believe with this phrase that "What doesn't kill you will make you stronger".

I would want to take this opportunity to thank all my members who have been there to support me and poured in your sweat and effort during my term. It is definitely a wonderful one and I do hope your continuous effort will bring the club to the next level.

I am looking forward to present my personal awards and certificate of appreciation for the "Best Rotaractor", "Best Project" and "Best Recruiter" Awards to my fellow members during Nanthini's Installation which will be held on the 15th of August, 2009.

Our club has grown so much ever since our Charter President Toh has first chartered the club. I believe our club will one day shine amongst other clubs.

Rac Port Klang in District Awards Nite

The District Awards Night (DAN) which was held at the Corus Hotel, Kuala Lumpur on June 6 2009.

The theme was "Passion in Red" and we all came with our best red costume to attend this event.

Guests of Honour were District Governor Dr Rajinder and Ann PP Surendra

Our club have submitted three projects to compete for the awards. They are the "Best Rotaract Awareness", "Best Fellowship" and "Best Professional Development" reports.

After 11 months of hard work from the members, we managed to win the “Best Rotaract Awareness” report in which we publicize the Rotaract movement through the Child Mortality Awareness Campaign at Klang Parade Shopping Complex on December 13th 2008.

Kudos to all the members of Rotaract Club of Port Klang Centennial who have worked hard & contributed to this award.

Also, lets congratulate Rtr Gun Chin Yong for being in the district board member assisting incoming DRR Amanda as District PR, Marketing & Membership Chairman.

Rotary and Rotaract Anniversary at Klang Executive Club Dinner

Dear members,

I have just returned from the Rotary and Rotaract Anniversary at Klang Executive Club (KEC). We have just celebrated our 4th Anniversary and I must say, time flies.

During the event, we conducted a Rotary and Rotaract Idol in which we had 3 rotarians and 3 rotaractors singing their lung out. Rotary Idol goes to Rtn Adrew Goh and Rotaract Idol goes to our guest called Sook Huan. Gary took part in singing for our club. Kudos to you.

I must say, I enjoyed this year's compared to last year. The food is better, the programme is exciting and last but not least, the crowd is even crazier. Pictures attached for members who have missed it.

May 9th 2009: Joint meeting RAC Bandar Sunway & Cervical cancer talk

As you all have known that, we had a joint-meeting with Rotaract Club of Bandar Sunway at Manchester Business School, Sunway University College on the 9th of May, 2009. At the same time, we held a Cervical Cancer talk and on-site vaccination to those who were present on that day.

I would like to take this opportunity to those who are willing to spent their Saturday/Wesak Day off just to attend the joint meeting and the Cervical Cancer talk. Besides that, many thanks to Mabel from GSK Pharmaceutical Company who have assisted me into organizing such event.

April 7 th 2009: District Governor visit to Rotary club of Port Klang

District Governor (DG) Dr. Rajindar Singh and his ann, PP Ann Surendra made his official visit to Rotary Club of Port Klang at the Royal Klang Club on Tuesday, April 7th 2009

President Jia Thiam prepared a book of club's activities reports to the DG.

The DG was very pleased with our reports. His comments was that our club is in the right track due to the commitment of the members.

Also, fellowship supper was provided. Thank you to our generous Rotarians.

Rotaract Seminar (organised by Rotary Group 9 clubs)

On April 4th, Rotary Club of Pantai Valley and Rotaract Club of Taylors Business School organized a Rotaract Seminar which is a day's workshop on business, personal effectiveness and achieving your goals and etc at Taylors College Subang main hall.

Six members from our club had attended the event.

Below are the speakers and their topics they have shared with us during the seminar.

1) Rtn Ian Homer (Business Coach)- Becoming an entrepreneur

2) Rtn Steve Ng - Finding employment in today's environment

3) Rtn Carsten Cziborr - Using your mind for a change (NLP)

4) Rtn Peter Anthony Davie - The power of simplicity concept

5) Rtn Laurie - Time Management

These speakers were excellent speakers who have both local and international speaking experience.

I must say, the RM15 paid are very well worth the price. The whole event took about 8-9 hours in which we have tea break and lunch in between.

We have gained many additional knowledge and experience we can't find on the book nor via the internet.

Never a Dull moment: District Rotaract Conference (Mar 27-29 2009) Port Dickson

We attended the District Rotaract Conference (DRC) at Eagle Ranch, Port Dickson. There were seven of us who attended the event.

Rtr. Gun and the rest of the gang arrived early and when I arrived at Eagle Ranch, they were playing beach volleyball.

I joined in later for the football activity. We did lots of stuff and activities during the event. Our Club Assembly was held in-conjunction with the DRC in which we discuss on some of the issues relating to the club’s status and how our club can do further to be improved.

After our club assembly, we attended the ice-breaking session which included some of the crazy activities such as beating egg white.

We’re quite lucky to have Rtr. Gun on our side as he has a vast amount of knowledge in beating egg white (Gun is an experience cook mar). And there’s some disgusting moment as well where rotaractors are required to eat raw egg yolk (Rtr Yogz..great team spirit, reason to get the organisers to give sugar for the meringue)

Besides that, we attended some of the seminar organized by Rotaract Club of Pudu. The seminar held was informative as they have experienced speakers who talk about self-realization, and Rotaractors from other club shares their past project amongst us and etc.

All in all, I am sure we had a great moment (lying down...zzzz)

We managed to hook up with old friends and exchange ideas on Rotaract.

Interesting facts about Rotaract Club Of Port Klang Centennial

1) This year, the club organised a mega project which focuses on child mortality which is this year's RI theme. We organized a Child Mortality Awareness Campaign at Klang Parade Shopping Complex. Joining us on that day was representative from UNICEF, GSK Pharmaceutical Company, orphans from Philea Home and many others.

2) The club's Child Mortality Awareness Campaign was a huge success. It was published in the Sin Chew Jit Poh and Nanyang newspaper.

3) Our club also joined the league of other rotaract clubs to form a sister club agreement with a rotaract club from another country. Recently, we have signed a sister club agreement with Rotaract Club of St. Louis College, Bangkok, Thailand.

4) Our club will be sending the highest no of participants for the District Rotaract Conference (DRC) which will be held at the end of March.

5) Our club members never failed to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) programme every year.

Rotaractor Blitz Gun Chin Yong and Richie Lee participated in this year's RYLA.

Rtr Gun won the award from RYLA best participant.

Time to De-clutter - Recyclable campaign (8 March 2009)

Well, they say, recycle is good for mother Earth.

We, rotaractors did our part by preserving the environment and resources. Perhaps, economy slowdown is good for the soul..as they say less demand, less resources used from nature. So, recycle used materials will help.

After breakfast in Selva, we gathered at the Office to collect the stacks of newspapers to the four vehicles. With some weight lifting and running exercise, we don't feel guilty for the calories of 'roti kosong' consumed as breakfast. Also, stomping madly on the aluminiun cans for sending the the center by Rtr Leong King, Jia Thiam and myself

Well, the RYLA participants representing RAC Port Klang Gun and Richie....we did our fair share of exercise...up an down two stories..:)

All in all, the sell off earns us Rm53, that goes to the community service fund.

Thanks for the efforts put in.

We're planning to collect 1000 of the aluminium can caps so that we're able to exchange them to a wheelchair. This wheelchair will be given to any old folk who needed it

Meeting at Neway, Centro (03.03.2009)

I have just returned from our club meeting at Neway, Centro.

Seven of us attended the session and we’re all enjoying every single moment we can get. For the very first time, we’re singing our club song through the microphone and conducted a Rotaract meeting during a karaoke session.

At the same time, my members celebrated my birthday. It was a nice and definitely an unforgettable moment. Pictures attached for members and guests who have missed it event.

Sister Club Agreement with Rotaract Club of St. Louis College District 3350 (Bangkok, Thailand) - March 1 2009

Greetings to all my fellow members and sawadikap to our fellow Rotaractors from Bangkok,

Today, we will mark down in our history book as a memorable day because we have just signed a Sister Pack Agreement with the President of Rotaract Club of St. Louis College from District 3350 Thailand.

I do hope with this sister pack agreement, we can foster friendship with friends and members from a different country. At the same time, we are able to exchange ideas and culture amongst ourselves.

I will officially announce that our fellow friends from Rotaract Club of St. Louis College shall be included in our network where we will share our meeting minutes and club activities with them.

A good way to update ourselves with them and at the same time, exchange ideas on how club activities can be made more interesting.

Let us work hand in hand with our fellow friends from Bangkok from today onwards and lets "Make Dreams Real".

Elected President of Term 2009/2010

Dear members,

I have great news for all of you!

As you all have known that we had our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on last Thursday. From the meeting, we have lay down our final decision on who’s going to be the next President.

The next president and vice-president for term 09/10 would be

President: Nanthini

Vice-President: Lee Leong King

The chosen President will then choose her Board of Director (BOD), which she sees best fit for the given position in BOD. I would need all the support from the members in supporting her during her term.

If you were approach by Nanthini to take up certain position, do not hesitate to take up the position. Instead of seeing it as a hassle, take it as a valuable learning experience. Once the positions of the BOD have been decided, Nanthini will then need to register her BOD for upcoming DRA.

Both Nanthini and Leong King have different visions for their term. Nanthini wanted to focus on Professional Development, Community and many fellowship where else Leong King am concern on the membership development first. He wanted to recruit as many members as possible knowing that our club is still growing.

No doubt, both have strong points to their visions and I do hope both of you will work together hand-in-hand and exchange ideas for the benefit of the club.

A little bit of introduction to the incoming President. Nanthini was a chartered member of Rotaract Club of Port Klang Centennial where she and Toh Harnniann (Chartered President) together built the very core of this club.

She has been with us for almost 4 years and her experience throughout all these years, her commitment and knowledge in Rotaract will somewhat benefit the club into greater success in years to come. Thus, let us together help her to bring this club to the next level.

I do believe that we will have an even greater term during 2009 / 2010.

Rotary Cheer Party at V-Garden Klang (20.02.2009)

Dear members,

I have just returned from the "Cheer Party" organized by our sponsoring Rotary Club at V-Garden Klang. The purpose of this event is to invite old folks and orphanages to gather under the same roof while enjoying each others laughter.

During the event, majority of us came in red costume. All the orphanages and old folks received ang pows from us. I must say that everyone must have enjoyed. Their smile and laughter explains all.

During the event, I met someone unexpected. She's the one with her mouth covered. Guess who she is. I am sure the old members would have know her. ><

International Potluck Dinner and CNY Celebration

Glorious food by chef Gun, Gary and Leong King, Nanthini. Way Wen, Richie & more...

Dear members,

As you all have known, we recently had an international potluck dinner in conjunction with Chinese New Year celebration. IPP Hui was kind enough to allow us to use her place as the gathering point.

Joining us on that day was the members from our club, Leong King with his wife and baby Cheryl (Hope I spell it correctly), Li Ching, Gun's brother, Hui Hui’s friend known as Amber who joined us during our Makan-Makan trip, Richie’s friends and rotaractors from other club.

During the International Potluck dinner, we have Italian, French, Singaporean drinks, Yee sang, rice, acar, Malaysian drinks,Thai Tom Yum seafood, Bruschetta, dumplings, dominos pizza and many more. After the dinner, we proceed to some chit-chat amongst ourselves present on that day.

Everyone went home with angpows for the first time from Leong King and a bloated stomach.

Though is a small gathering, I am pretty sure everyone enjoyed the moment and I am definitely looking forward to another event with all of you.

Joint Rotary-Rotaract Meeting (20.01.09)

Dear fellow members,

We had just returned from the joint Rotary-Rotaract meeting with our sponsoring Rotary Club.

Today's meeting was filled up with many rotarians and we have guests joining us as well during the meeting.

We have Albert Lim (son of Rotarian PP Chang Mee) giving a talk on "Fashion Show in Melbourne, Australia" during the meeting.

This talk has been an eye opener to us on the entertainment industry and we have definitely learn something new out of this meeting.

The meeting adjourned to some fellowship and we had Yee Sang after dinner.

BOD/Club Assembly and Fellowship at Rakuzen Japanese (18 January 2009)

RAC Port Klang Centennial members gathered at Rakuzen KL on the 18th of January, 2009 for fellowship cum club assembly.

Thus, with the consent of all paying members, the club subsidized half the cost of the meal we had. RM33 for a Japanese Buffet lunch is definitely a great deal. (Yum yum!)

While having lunch, we had a short BOD and Club Assembly.

This Club Assembly was an impromptu session to get members to provide valuable feedback.

Below are the details of the club assembly. Members who have missed it can always voice out their concern on the club.

It is finally for the club to have our Annual General Meeting (AGM) to elect the incoming board of directors for Rotary/Rotaract year 2009/2010. And during this AGM, I shall be the election chairman.

During the AGM, members who are in “good standing” will only be allowed to vote for the President Elect and the elected president shall choose his/her board members which best fit to the given position. Member with the second highest vote shall automatically be the Vice-President assisting the President in every possible way.

Medical Outreach Camp at Teluk Gong

Dear members,

As all of you have known that the Rotary had held a Medical Outreach at Teluk Gong. We assisted them in a way by conducting games and activities for the children. Joining us on that day was Rtn Jerry Yap's student from AEA. They were there to entertain those children as well.

We set up booth and activities similiar to the concept of fun fair. There's games like blowling balloon, shooting with water gun.

We bought a range of prizes for them such as stationary, books, toys and many more.

Though we ran out of prizes to be given to the children, I must say that all the children must have enjoyed the event as they smile and laugh while walking away with a handful of prizes with them.

I would like to thank those who are willing to sacrifice their Sunday morning to assists us in this activities and bring meanings into the life of those children on that day.

I am definitely looking forward to an even more exciting term with all of you.

Rac offsite meeting at Ho Ho Steamboat Restaurant (19 Dec 2009)

Today we have another informal meeting and for the first time, we have invited a speaker to join us for the meeting.

She's a Broadcaster Journalist from Radio Bernama and we have definitely learned alot from things we never once knew regarding her career.

At the same time, we had steamboat amongst the members to celebrate the success of the Child Mortality Awareness Campaign.

Since Rtn John Low was kind enough to treat us to this dinner, we are planning to organize yet another fellowship at either Telok Gong to have seafood or a simple karaoke session in the future.

RAC Port Klang mega project: Child Mortality campaign

Dear fellow members

As you all have know that the Child Mortality Awareness Campaign was held on 13 December 2008 Saturday.

This project has been considered as one of the biggest project ever organized by our club and the only club in the District which focuses so much on Child Mortality.

Representative from UNICEF (right pic) and GSK Pharmaceutical Company came and set up a small booth for people to drop by and ask any question related to Child Mortality. Exhibition Board was set up for audiences to look at.

At the same time, flyers on Child Mortality and Rotaract were given out. During the event, we held a coloring contest game for all the children turned up during the event. Joining us on that day was none other than our fellow Rotarians who are willing to spend their Saturday time supporting us during the event.

We have Starbucks coming down to lend us a helping hand and gave their free promotional drinks to all the audience throughout the day and we have sponsor for the orphans to McDonald. All 23 of the orphans from Philea Home must have enjoyed the burgers and fries.

The pictures of their smile say it all. Besides that, many thanks to Rtn Joy for being able to get King’s ice-cream for all the children during the event and Rtn Chew for the mineral water bottle. And most importantly, Rtr Aik Hooi for her constant effort and sweat she has putted in to organize this event. Our three months of sweat and efforts pays off as the result turn out to be quite successful. Though we face many glitches throughout the event, but I must say that everyone enjoyed the event. Attached with this email is the picture during the event for those who have missed it.

I am definitely looking to a more exciting term with all of you.

We Inspire and Believe - Rotaractors in District Interactors Conference (DIC) 2008.

Kompleks Rakan Muda Daerah Klang in Sementa was the venue of the recently concluded 40th District Interact Conference. The event was hosted by RC Port Klang and ably assisted by the members of their partner clubs, RC Klang and RC Shah Alam.

The conference was attended by more than 490 Interactors from all over D3300, including 2 exchange students named Chris Harvey and Linda Chen from Australia and Taiwan respectively.

Rtr. Chew Way Wen from RAC Port Klang Centennial spearheaded the 3-day program for the Interactors together with Rotaractors from various clubs around District 3300. A total of 30 Rotaractors were involved officially in activities such as the business challenge and also the various speakers’ sessions.

The day started as early as 5am for some Rotarians when Interactors who travelled from as far as Terengganu and Kedah arrived in Klang town and called up the Rotarians on duty. Most of the participants started to arrive in the afternoon and the last batch of Interactors safely arrived in the venue at 5pm on the same day. Interactors from various schools have already started to mingle around with each other since early in the morning and made good friends with each other. The official program commenced at 3pm on Friday with a brief welcome for the Interactors and the introduction of the Rotaractors who will be facilitating the conference as Group Discussion Leaders (GDLs) for the Interactors. After that, the Interactors who were already assigned into groups moved together with their Rotaractor GDLs for the ince-breaking session.

Here, the Interactors played some games arranged by the Rotaractors and even created their own group cheer.

Later that night, Rtn. John Low from RC Port Klang and Rtn. PP AR Peter from RC Klang gave their welcoming address and house rules briefing respectively. Next up, Rtr. President Yan Liang of RAC Taylors’ Business School and Rtr. PP Bernard Hor of RAC Penang City took helm as the emcees for the night and conducted the "Rotary, Rotaract & Interact Quiz" where a cash prize of RM50 was up for grabs. Interactors were frantically searching for answers from Rotarians and Rotaractors alike, but in the end the exchange student Chris Harvey from Australia managed to bag the cash prize.

The main highlight of the night was when Rtr. PP Ravinder Singh entertained all the participants with his light-hearted jokes and had everyone in stitches with his on-stage antics. And finally, the Rotaractors decided to play another round of games with the Interactors before proceeding for supper and bed.

At approximately 9am on Saturday, the official opening ceremony commenced with the arrival of the District Governor, Dr. Rajindar Singh and First Lady Surendra Kaur accompanied by several Rotarians and followed by Interactors who have volunteered to be the flag bearers for the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was also graced by several district officers such as DGE Leslie Salehuddin, DGN Lim Kok Beng and District Secretary Dr. Joy Varughese.

The 1st Klang Boys’ Brigade Company led the singing of the "Negaraku" with their marching band rendition of the national anthem. Then, the Rotarian emcee invited DIC 2008 Organizing Chairperson Rtn. PP Eric Yap and Rtn. President Johnson Wey to give their welcoming speeches and followed by the guest-of-honor, DG Dr. Rajindar Singh.

The Interactors also had the privilege of listening to Rtn. Anant Kasibhatla’s talk on "Forget No More" from RC Bangsar. Next, several Interactors were chosen to debate on the topic "Co-curricular activities are more important than curricular activities in youth development" with Interactors from Klang Valley were picked to oppose the motion against Interactors from outside Klang Valley. The exchanges between the debaters were lively and kept the participants in their seats with their witty response and genuine opinions.

After lunch, a leadership talk on organizing events was given by a representative from Taylor’s College School of Communications for the participants. Next up on the schedule was Rtr. PP Bernard Hor’s talk on "Empowering Youth in today’s business" where he spoke about his experiences in the business world and encouraged the Interactors to be more proactive and participant in the businesses. Then, he personally led the business challenge activity where the Interactors were exposed to the various models in business and financial intelligence. Later in the night, the groups of Interactors were to present their business models to some Rotaractors who were role-playing as "Venture Capitalists".

Questions and answers were fielded as honest as possible and Rotarians were truly impressed with the knowledge and business acumen expressed by the Interactors. The night ended with more fellowship between Rotaractors and Interactors where they exchange contact numbers and name cards.

On Sunday morning, the Interactors gathered at the main hall for an impromptu talk on "Amazing opportunities in Rotaract" by Rtr. PDRR Chandrasegaran of RAC Damansara, Rtr. President James Ong of RAC Subang and Rtr. PP Bernard Hor. Here, Interactors gained first-hand experience on what is Rotaract all about and many Interactors were impressed with all 3 of them. Then, Rtr. PDRR Chandrasegaran moderated a forum on Interact in D3300 where the Interactors were encouraged to voice out their opinions on the improvements they would like to see in the Interact movement in the country and also to share the experiences with the other participants. Rtr. PDRR Chandra was also able to give some feedback together with several Rotaractors and noted the matters raised.

The closing address was given by Rtn. PP Kuah Leong Qui on behalf of Rtn. PP Ng Boon Su who was absent. Before that, the Rotaractors gave a birthday bash to all the Interactors who were born in November and even gave an impromptu performance on stage as a farewell gift to the participants. Right after the closing ceremony, everyone mixed around for one last time before departing for their respective hometowns with memories deeply etched in their minds.

This year’s District Interact Conference theme of "To Empower the Youth of Today for Tomorrow" was achieved with the help from all parties, especially the Rotarians and Rotaractors. Everyone voluntarily gave their support and time for the success of this conference and are looking forward to the next conference.

Film & Musical Workshop at SMJK Kwang Hwa (07.11.2008

Dear members,

As you all have known, we had a film and musical workshop with our fellow Interactors, students and teacher from SMJK Kwang Hwa on the 7th of November 2008. This film and musical workshop act as an eye opener to everyone present on that day as we are lucky enough to be able to invite two famous speakers to share their knowledge and experience on film and musical respectively.

Joining us for that workshop session are none other than our fellow Rotarians who is willing to take their time off just to support our event and I must say, they are really supportive towards our club activities.

By the end of the session, students were informed on the various available courses for them to choose on after they have left their high school period.

Credit goes to Rotaractor Aik Hooi for pulling off such a wonderful job and I am definitely looking forward to other event under the Professional Development Avenue. Members! Stay tune for further updates as we might be able to have a one day Salsa Dance class for members to try out next week.

The Office new 'facelift' & Selling of Recyclable Materials (Oct 19 2008)

Our meeting place (aka the Office) has been given a new 'facelift' about two weeks ago.

President Jia Thiam organised these in line by sending all collected recyclable materials.

Lots of items eg stationeries, banners was kept properly, neatly.

We even assembled the our club's recognition certificates (past year's RI Presidential Citation, DRR Citation and Chartered certificate) on the wall properly nailed.

Also, the carpet was vaccumed and the tiles floor (at the back near the toilet) was also mopped.

During our midst of cleaning, we found a starving black kitten hiding in the drawer..we wonder how it can survive without adequate food and water...talk about animal survival instinct.

I carried the kitten and put in ourdoors near the village houses where lots of stray cats go there to get their daily food...hopefully it will survive.

Gosh, it was a fruitful Sunday. The recyclable materials were all sold and we got Rm50 (photo above to proof this)

Our president predicted accurately on this that we will get Rm50 for our club community service fund. :)

Film and Music speaker session during club meeting (16.10.08)

Dear members,

We had our regular club meeting on the 16.10.08 and we are lucky enough to be able to invite two speaker giving a talk on their profession-Film and Music respectively.

They have brought samples of videos they have made and I must say, it is truly amazing. In fact, it was my first time learning the behind the scene stuff regarding film and music making.

If you wish to find out more, stay tuned as these two speaker will be conducting a workshop at Kwang Hwa School on the 1st of November 2008. They will be teaching us on how film and music is created.

Its a fun packed day: Skytrex Adventure -October 4th & joint meeting with RAC Gombak fellowship

On the 4th of October, our club have organized a Skytrex adventure where we have invited our Rotarians to take part with us. Our goal was to have fellowship between members and Rotarians and at the same time, our club is looking forward to a stronger bond between the Rotaract Club and the Rotary Club.

We did lots of activities together such as climbing up the trees (becoming Tarzan) and going through the swinging bridge. Though those activities may be challenging but our Rotarians managed to pull themselves through.

Rotarian John who is being the oldest amongst the Rotarians, managed to complete all the obstacles. He has inspired all of us to complete the whole challenge. At the same time, our Rotaract Advisor Rtn Patrick Ang was constantly cheering all of us from above the trees =)

After the event, we had a joint meeting with Rotaract Club of Gombak. Our club is slowly opening up to other club where we can look forward to built more network with other rotaractors. Once the meeting had adjourned, we had fellowship at a steamboat and bbq buffet Restaurant called Talipon at Kuchai Lama.

Club Assembly and Makan-Makan trip to Ipoh and Penang (20 Sep 2008)

RAC Port Klang Centennial had our Club Assembly and Makan-Makan trip to Ipoh and have tried their famous morning Dim Sum, and even have the chance to try one of the best Soya Bean at Ipoh.

This makan-makan trip involved Rotaractors from our club and also rotaractors all the way from Rac Subang, Rac Gombak and Rac Penang City. The group was big and we had a great time together.

We are quite lucky to have some of the local Penang rotaractors to guide us and bring us around town to taste all the good foods.

At the same time, we gave our IPP Hui Hui a surprise birthday celebration during Penang City's Installation and I'm sure she's happy with it. Hui Hui. You owed us a Birthday Party ya.

This makan-makan trip is held together with our Club Assembly to review on Hui Hui's term and some review of my term and how the club have progress and should progress.

I'm Jia Thiam (Current President of Rac of Port Klang Centennial).

I would like to start this network system involving the Rotaractors and Interactors where Interactors will recive emails of all of our club'c activities, meeting minutes and other agendas to keep the Interactors updated on what Rotaract is all about and what do we actually do.

If Interactors do find some of our activities interesting, you can actually drop by and participate with us. At the same time, Interactors can keep us updated on your daily activities and let us guide you in your activities and we might even attend your projects and activities. The more the merrier.

By the time the Interactors have completed their high school, those interested ones may join the Rotaract Club and continue making friends around Malaysia and probably the world.

As you all have known, we had a speaker session where we have invited Mr. Loh T.H. to give a talk on diamond.

We are even thankful that he brought REAL diamond and showed them to us.

We're grateful that he brought some of his equipment and shared his knowledge on diamond.

Though this session was short for one to grasp the whole knowledge on diamond, but is good enough for one to avoid getting cheated.

Indeed in the last few months, as fellow rotaractors, it is customary to visit other clubs and support their annual installation.

One of the unique club that always had hilarious ways to raise community service project shortfall is RAC Subang.

Members and especially the club presidents ate wasabi, dancing wearing a oversized bra and inpersonate human pole dancing.

Other club installation made all of us dressed in the same colour clothing (orange) to match the theme (RAC Gombak).

Or, either members had do the sexy poses (showing some muscles) to win attractive prizes (Pic of Gun won a lunch voucher at Carcosa Seri Negara) after some slick moves

Some rotaract club installation are really formal this year (RAC Penang City) round but, as smart Rotaractors, we know how to mix the fun, formality and play.

On 2 August 2008, RAC Port Klang had our first community service project, bringing the Saint Vincent De Paul (SVP) children (Klang) to Pulau Ketam.

It was our club's community service director Nanthini first project. The unforgettable moments was that the rest of use missed boarding the train as the train door alarm started to beep fast.

Ended up, we drove the children up instead of waiting for another round of train service which was about half an hour later to reach Port Klang.

Joining us as our loyal supporter for community service, DRRE Amanda Lam from RAC Gombak who came to join us to help us.

We went to visit the aquaculture farm, then had seafood lunch and tour around the small island. Yes..being a personal tour guide to this group of children.

After Pulau Ketam outing: Futsal with SVP orphans (23.08.2008)

As you all may know that we've bring 6 children from SVP for a friendly match of futsal. I can see in their face that they were all excited and the bond we shared with them from Pulau Ketam, have eventually grew with this activity.

We definitely have a great time together amongst the Rotaract members and the kids.

I would like to thank Rtr Nanthini for being the OC for this project and the rest of the members who's willing to sacrifice their Saturday morning for this friendly futsal match.

Snapshot: RAC Port Klang Centennial installation: Retro Rewind 70s

July and Aug 2008 is month filled with club installation events across Rotaract and Rotary clubs.

Let’s feature our first rotaract club installation for new term in the district – our club.

With that awareness in advance, RAC Port Klang 'broke' the record by having the 4th year installation on May 31st 2008 for installation of President Jia Thiam and incoming board of directors.

Installation venue was near the vicinity of most members home, Red Oven Café Taman Chi Liung Klang.

The installation theme is retro rewind 70s, black and red team.

The incoming board members went to Sri Hartamas to search for 70s theme costumes and afro hair wig.

Our new term club service director, OC Rtr Gun Chin Yong had pulled this together in a short span of time.

Lots of hard work from the organizing committee was put in at last hour. Main task was to hang the black and red satin drapes materials. For the goodie bags, we had generous sponsorship from resourceful Rtr Leong King and OC.

At venue entrance, we brought few freshly chopped bamboo trees were tied at the main entrance and hanged red and black strips of cloth.

This year, we had welcome drink for each guest - a shot glass containing sakae and chillies.

The highlight of the event was raffles draw event to raise fund for China earthquake disaster fund and Myanmmar cyclone disaster fund.

The fund raising event was a success, thanks to the efforts of club members providing and sponsoring attractive raffles draw prize. Main prize was a 3D 2N stay at any Berjaya Hotel Resort.

Winner was DRR Leik Hong himself who ‘sapu’ the prize despite he bought the raffles draw tickets and last minute.

We had privilege of inviting PP Cheah Li Yen as guest of honour for the event again. About 10 Rotarian members and spouses attended and they did have their chance of fellowship

This time we had visitors from Penang, DRR Leik Hong and his team of members came all the way to Klang.

We had guests from other Rotaract clubs, RAC Gombak, RAC Subang, RAC Pudu, RAC KL and new club in the block RAC Klang members.

Time flies as I gave my outgoing speech as President and hand over the baton to President Jia Thiam. I trust that he will do a great job of leading the team.

His first liner of speech was ‘I had never being a president of any club before’.

Our newly installated community service director, Nanthini was given a surprise birthday cake present.

Thank you to members who had put in the hard work and the patience of attending countless installation organisining committee meeting.

And not forgetting… our bubbly club service director for his leadership.

Last Saturday (5/7/08) at SMK Dato’ Hamzah, we organized the Interact Leadership Training Seminar 2008 and 8th Interact Joint Installation for Presidents & Boards Members of Interact Clubs from SMK Dato’ Hamzah, Raja Lumu, Pandamaran Jaya, Kwang Hua and Pulau Ketam.

The seminar was to provide soft skill training to Interactors to prepare them on how to make their dreams real (Menyatakan Impian). This is in line with our believe that training the youth to serve others and to achieve their dream is important.

Interact being a Rotary-sponsored youth service club established since 1962 in Melbourne, Florida, USA, provides opportunities for young people of secondary school age to work together in a world fellowship of service and international understanding.

Today, there are more than 11,000 Interact clubs with more than 258,000 Interactors worldwide. In our Rotary District 3300, 165 Interact clubs with more than 16,000 Interactors, develop skills in leadership and attain practical experience in conducting service projects, thereby learning the satisfaction that comes from serving others.

RI President D.K. Lee encourages Interact Clubs to undertake worthy service activities in their community. Interact clubs are encouraged to complete in any four activities from the following categories: Membership, Club Service, Community Service, Vocational Service and International Understanding.

District Rotaract Assembly ( DRA ) 2008

I was able to represent Rotaract Club Of Port Klang Centennial in attending the District Rotaract Assembly 2008 which was held from 26th – 27th April 2008, under the sponsorship of our Rotary Club of Port Klang.

We reached PGRM right on time for registration and also for the first plenary meeting but to our surprise, We, members of Port Klang Centennial were shocked by what we have discovered!

Kishans’ long lost brother Sunil…. See how they resemble each other?? My god…
And to add to that, they even have a similar personality, similar way of speaking, similar taste for women… Ooops, said too much. What the heck, everything the same!

We were lost for words…. The only obvious way to differentiate them was that Kishan wore braces. After the 1st plenary meeting ended, still flabbergasted, we went for lunch nonetheless.

Buffet lunch was served at the “Junction Lounge” (if I had remembered it correctly) with an array of international and local cuisines to tickle our taste buds. The likes of sushi, pastas, sweet and sour fish, cendol, salads, cakes, puddings, and waffles were all lined and ready for us.

Second plenary meeting which consists of workshop module were being conducted for the respective avenues of service. This year, the ‘International Service’ and ‘Community Service’ while the ‘Club Service’ and ‘Professional Development Service’ was being conducted together in separate classrooms. The ‘President’s course and the ‘secretary’s course were held in different other classrooms as well.

Being the incoming club service director, I attended my stipulated course with Balram (incoming and current PD director). Everything went productively and all ended right on time by five o’clock in the evening. We retired to our rooms as we have been given two hours of free and easy time to do what ever we wanted.

Feeling refreshed, we were ready to attend the next item which was the ‘gala dinner’. I was over excited that i lost all dignity I have and let Jia Thiam took this ridiculous picture of myself.
The setting for the night seems to be grand… What was I thinking; it should be grand as a very important ceremony was to be performed on stage that very night itself. Everyone was busy going round doing what they were supposed to. Has anyone ever been so ardent, passionate, hard working about completing a certain task other than our very own home grown rotaractors….? We enjoyed the food, the events of passing over the DRR’ship from DRR Dinesh to incoming DRR Leik Hong, the revealing of the incoming district committee, and of course the round of drinks being offered around.
Saw how enthusiastic were we to even have this pic taken? I wonder why Kishan had to have that sun glasses on… We even took our air-time on the podium to take a Port Klang Rotaract Group photo.
Hui hui seems to be too tired to even lift her eyes or maybe it was the booze. What the heck, the rest of us looks sober enough but as a matter of fact it was the opposite… hehehehe…
Harley and Dicky looks stoned enough to not walk. James had a greaaat time with his new found romance with Kristine… Look at how insecure James was to hold her hand that tight and offer her an orchid strait from his lips… Awwww, how sweet that must be. I wonder what James got as reward from Kristine that night? Only James will truly know the answer to that question… hehehe Everyone retired to their rooms to call it a night by about 12 midnight. Alaaah, say only retire to rooms, but the truth is everyone had their plans all thought out… Some went, clubbing (as expected), some went mamaking (something new), some went playing truth or dare (cant believe it, closed room affair… how come I was not notified??? Maybe I was to uptight kot…), and some went back to their rooms (Yaaam seeeeng, we were drinking beers over an old movie “Euro Trip”)

It was taken into calculation that not everyone will be able to attend the third and final plenary meeting which was about ‘GSE’ (Group Study Exchange), ‘Interota Seoul’, and ‘APRRC Bali’ due to deep slumber, or snuggling under some warm blankets, whilst those that did attend were not spared from the hangover from the night before.
Ooops, What was Kishan dreaming about?? Kesian Balram….
Everyone took their time in saying their goodbyes and exchanging contacts for future references before calling it a day at the DRA 2008. However, just before we left, we had witnessed an act of conspiracy towards a certain car owner. I think it was done out of gratitude kot… Well, what ever it may be, we have recorded it as “Spanar Jaya Season Finale”

This photo was shown in blur to avoid any further misunderstandings and to show the model of the car which was a black Proton Gen 2 Pesona… I think... These are the sequential photos of what happened.
Anyway, no animals or plants and most importantly no human beings were harmed during the process… hahahaha

AS WE ALWAYS DO CHARITY FOR HUMANS, LETS NOT LEAVE OUT THE ANIMALS......

Those were the exact words of Rotaractor Tan Jia Thiam, our Community Service Director. He went on with his project, and set it out in working order, and on the 23rd of March, we headed to Zoo Negara...

Kishan (Shantha and myself were also in the same car) was tailgating Gun all the way from the Bukit Kemuning toll at the speed of 140 km/h (don’t whoa.. harap takde saman larr) until the entrance of Zoo Negara. Once we were inside, we were greeted by our fellow Rotaractors and some Zoo Negara staff.

As soon as we had our breakfast consisting of chicken rice which was pretty good (the restaurant was selected by Gun, kudos bro!!), we were split into groups. Hui Hui, Jia Thiam, Shantha, Kishan, James Ong, Amanda, myself and a few other Rotaractors were assigned to help out in the Bird Park, where we were split into groups, with each group given certain tasks. Amanda and myself had to clean some carpets which were used in the bird cages. It was quite tiresome but we managed to do it fast though.

Then almost all of us were ripping bread pieces apart and throwing them into a basket, which I feel everyone was enjoying and laughing their hearts out to hear the constant antics of Kishan, Shantha, James, JT, and the others. James was singing “It’s raining bread! Hallelujah!”, Shantha was complaining about the birds being too demanding till they only request Gardenia bread (and at times a raisin bread will pop up among the loaves!!), and Kishan and Jia Thiam were cracking endless jokes.. Really had fun la wei…

Then Kishan, Shantha and I were cutting out carpets for the bird cages. Leong King lent us a hand as well. As soon as we accomplished the task, everyone was ready to have lunch. All the hard work that we did contributed to a hungry stomach (lots of calories got burnt on that day, I guess), and knowing that we have Domino’s in store, our stomachs naturally became hungry rapidly.

We headed to the entrance to have our food. Hannah was so impatient, if she was left to do it, she will just rip the pizza box and gobble up the pizzas... (Hah Hah!!) We headed to the canteen where everyone was aaahing and oohing after seeing the pizzas. Shantha held the record for most pizzas (9 in total, if I’m not mistaken.. Heh Heh), and everyone especially Feldman got utterly shocked. Lloyd was hanging around interviewing every one of us with his camera, and Hannah was constantly being told ghost stories about some pizza ghost. And that’s when Gun came up with the lingerie ghost story, which we laughed our heads off!! Even Kishan ended up being a ghost, as seen in the picture below…

After filling our stomachs, some went back, and the rest stayed to tour around the zoo. I’ve never been to a zoo in my life, and this was the first time. We got on a train kind of thingy which took us past a few animal cages and stopped us at a particular station.

We saw animals of all kinds, bulls, a tiger (I only saw one miserable fellow), lions and a leopard. We headed to the Ape Centre where Gun found out he was part of an ape as well… I was happy for Gun as he was reunited with his natives…

The lion was the funniest. Kishan, somehow started speaking animal language and was communicating with the lion. He managed to provoke the lion to pose for our ‘paparazzi’ team, and even made the lion growl! Hats off, Dr Dolittle! We headed to a reptile centre, where I only saw snakes sleeping. The girls however, went ga-ga over the otters who were celebrity posers. One otter tried grabbing Jia Thiam’s camera. And Port Klang Centennial is now planning to open up a Rotaract Club in Zoo Negara, in which the otters would be members.

After a while, we planned to get ourselves back home for a nice nap. Everyone enjoyed their day. For the photo shoots (which were held before we started the tour around the zoo), everyone was somehow aiming for Hannah’s head. Looks like Hannah has many assassinators lurking to prey upon her by any given chance!! HA HA HA!!

After a most tiring day, we all went home and had good naps (I suppose). The trip to the zoo is one that I will cherish among my sweetest memories of being part of Rotaract.

Club Community Service Project @ Zoo Negara

Dear members,

Yesterday (23/March/2008), we had our club community service project & also a learning tour at Zoo Negara.

All in all, we had 19-20 ppl participated as zoo volunteers. There were four guests, Ai Mee, Li Shun, Karine and Irene (friends of JT, Lloyd, Gun,Hannah), President Amanda Lam from RAC Gombak and two Rotaractors from RAC Subang, PE James Ong and Rtr Ying Xin. We like to thank the guests, Rtr Amanda, James, Ying Xin for their support.

Members, thank you all for waking up early by 6am (yup..forgoing your precious Sunday morning sleep) to sweep & dispose the animal poops, feeding the birds with the zoo employees, prepared birds feed and cleaning up the cages & compound till 12.30 noon.

Although we were tired, we did learn and had some fun during lunch and Zoo Negara tour fellowship. It has been ages since we visited the zoo.

Lets thank our diligent comm service director Jia Thiam for planning the event and getting his sidekick, Rtr Gun who bought dominos pizzas, chicken rice for breakfast and lunch.

Also, we had a short interview clips conducted by Rtr Lloyd to all attendees in a humourous manner.

Members, March 08 has been a activities packed month in da club. Thank you for the support.

There will be no club meeting this week.

Club meeting will be on first week of April, Thursday April 3rd 2008.

Last weekend, our club had its annual AGM for election of incoming President and Vice President. The results are OUT!

Incoming president Jia Thiam (age: 21 this year) is no stranger to club members. Currently he is the Community Service Director for the club this term.

Although he joined the club about a year ago, he is an indeed a helpful, athletic, bright and cheerful young man. He was the producer of the 3rd club installation’s opening ceremony video clip.

He also was part of the 4th Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract conference (APRRC Malaysia Rotaract D3300) organizing committee member (SAA for the ceremony and logistic committee member).

Also he is the eldest child in his family. Currently he is pursuing Bachelor of Business Management at Sunway University College. His hobby is watching anime.

His organizational and creative capability will definitely bring the club to new heights.

And not forgetting:

Vice President: Rtr Chew Way Wen

Incoming Vice President Brian Chew Way Wen (age: 21 this year) was a Youth Exchange Student to Brazil two years back. He is the eldest of the three siblings. His father is currently the member of Rotary club of Port Klang Centennial.

He was the chartered member of the club and past term International Service Director. Currently he is pursuing a degree in architecture. He is well liked for his can do attitude and organizational capability.

His main contributions and achievements are being the co-organizing chairperson for the two recent district events – ie District Interact Conference and 2008 District Rotaract Conference in Pangkor Island.

Also he was involved in the 4th Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference (APRRC) 2007 hosted in Malaysia organizing committee as SAA and logistic committee.

Let’s lend the ultimate support to these two leaders for the new Rotary term.

Dear fellow rotaractors,

On 20th December 2007, we had three new members, Rotaractor Balram, Kishan and Shanta inducted to the family of Rotaract Club of Port Klang Centennial. Congratulations to the three of them. Their biodata will be posted in the club's blog soon.

Also we had three guests (Chin Loong, Leong King, Blitz Gan) who visited the club meeting yesterday.

Membership recruitment and development remains an important thing to Rotary and Rotaract. For members who had went AWOL, do make an effort to attend, participate and learn.

Also a big thank you to our three Rotarians, Rotarian PP Michael Tan (Rotarian Advisor), Rtn Michael Cheah (New Generations Director) and Rtn Patrick Ang (Honourary Secretary) for their time attending and witnessing the induction of the three new members. They are always there to support the club and members.

Not forgetting to all members who turned up at the meeting despite the rain and a public holiday.

Also during the meeting, Rotarian Patrick Ang spoke about financial planning and how to grow our wealth. It was an interesting talk to all members. I can see the audience was amazed and we can learn how to build the portfolio of wealth.

It was a priviledge to learnt from a experienced Rotarian and self made entreprenuer.

That was the last meeting of the year.

Next's year (next month, in fact) meeting will be January 3rd 2008 (Thursday). Speaker for the meeting will be Rotarian Johnson Wey. Stay tuned for more details.

We are suppose to have an AGM for election of new board of directors on January 3rd 2008.
But to the fact, the more time is needed for preparation and planning for the new exco, the AGM will be held in either first week of February 2008 (before CNY holidays).

Therefore, January 3rd will be the normal club meeting. Guests are welcomed.

January 17th 2008 meeting will be District Rotaract Representative DRR Dinesh visit to the club.

Out of my normal boring working days, something happened… I should say quite extra ordinary. It was during a normal night, while I was catching up on some works and working overtime. I went back for a change so I could get more comfortable since my office it just close by to my place.

Quickly, I had my dinner and changed into casual short and t-shirt, and come back to the office to continue to start working. Arrived in front of the office, I can’t find any empty parking slot. However, I spotted something familiar, an old grey colour 1980’s 200 Series Mercedes. I thought to myself that is my dad’s car. Without thinking twice, I parked my Isuzu Trooper right behind it and went into the office.

While I was into my works, talking to my colleague about the current project, about this and that, someone came knocking on our office glass door. My colleague, who sits near the door, saw the person is pointing at something in front of our office. Subconsciously, he knew it should be some vehicles blocking other vehicles as it is common for shop houses like ours to be cramped up with many vehicles.

Immediately, I thought of my vehicle. I wondered why my dad doesn’t come in himself and let me know. As soon as I got out, I find out why. I saw a Malay guy, who is as tall as me and slightly muscular, leaning on my vehicle. He had a cigarette in his mouth and looks pretty calm. I realized the car I block isn’t my dad’s and it’s someone else. I felt sorry right away. It happened to be the same model, same colour and about the same age too, I guess.

I tried my luck by smiling to him as soon as our eyes contact, lifted my hand and to gesture a ‘sorry’. Out of all my expectations, the Malay guy started a rampage, saying, “Mengapa you orang suka bagi orang lain trouble?” in Malay mixing with English. (Direct translation - “Why you people like to give other people troubles?”) As he said this, he raises his voice and becoming more provoking. He continued to question me about the same issue that I blocked his car. He continued, “Why you people here is so inconsiderate?”, “Why you people here like to do this?”

He was leaning and standing in front of my vehicle. The reproaching carried on like this for a minute or so, long enough that I have had enough of him. While he was bitching out, he actually moves closer to block my way to make sure that I would take up all his abuses. With his high pitch and his body language, it was obvious that he is suggesting for a fight.

There were many things going through my mind at the moment. Should I throw him a punch and whack him with my golf club? But I might end in jail that night. Or, should I provoke him more to get a punch from him and make a police report, so I have proof to get him into jail? But I definitely hate to have a broken nose. Well, either way is not what I wanted because I will not get to finish my work which is due tomorrow 7am!

So, what I really did was put up both of my arms crossed in front of my chest, looking at him emotionlessly, at least as emotionlessly as possible. To be frank, with pissed off face too. Crossing my arms meant that I did not want to fight him at all. Still, he was reluctant to let me go off easily. He threw a question and asks, “You ini, tak pernah belajar ke?” (Direct Translation – “You this, never study?”)

After all these years that my parents have spent on me in schools and universities, I kept quiet. Then I shook my head indicating, “Yeah, you might be pretty right” and raise my shoulder giving the “I don’t know, do you really believe?” look. Then he threw his best English, “So you now, get the hell out here!!” (Strategically missing the ‘of’ word).

Seeing him finally moving out of the way, I walk to my vehicle disgustedly and move it away. Of course, I didn’t throw him a punch, though I really wanted to. When I was in my car, I saw passer-by nearby walk away disappointedly. I guess he has witnessed the whole drama and was hopeful of a great street fight. I sure hope he is standing at my side.

When I entered back into the office, I feel a cold sting running through my back. As though I had just taken a Roller Coaster ride, or have just recovered from a Bungee Jump. I was not frightened but simply in a disbelief stage. I just could not believe I am honoured to meet such a big axxhole.

Whether if it is me that should not have blocked his vehicle or he could have expressed his need to get out there more pleasantly (maybe his car’s honk was not working that night). What he did was simply immature and low class. I have to admit it only takes another immature and low class fool to fight him back.

Well, fortunately, that night carried on quietly with me finishing my works back in the office.

District Interact Conference - A Huge Success and A Big Thank You

Dear fellow members,

Last weekend, the district Rotaractors gathered to help the Rotarians to manage and 'babysit' 609 Interactors in the District Interact conference in USM Penang. These interactors came from all over Malaysia.

I was there at the event with Jia Thiam as Group Discussion Leader (GDL) and Way Wen who was the co-organiser. We stayed for three days and two nights in USM hostel.

We chartered a bus together with 26 Interactors from 5 schools with Rotarian Michael Cheah, Rotarian Joy Leow and Rotarian John Low.

It was really fun being a GDL although we had the late nights 'supervising' the Interactors.

And the most important I do note that there is committed bond and cooperation shown by each rotaractor in the district. Differences are put aside to make the event a success.

Rtr Jia Thiam and Way Wen, a big thank you to both of you for your utmost dedication in Rotary organised district events. Keep up this current year Rotaract theme Serve With Sincerity.

I am proud to say, we successfully fulfilled on the DRR citation requirement - a joint project with interactors.

Members, do make an effort to participate in such events because this is what Rotaract is all about - having fun, fellowship and opportunity to serve.

A heads up to all members, Rotary Club of Port Klang will be the next DIC host club in term 2008/2009 under the leadership of current PE Johnson Wey and Rotaractor Way Wen. Do lend your utmost support to the organising committee.

To New Gen director Rotarian Michael, Rotarian John and Rotarian Joy, on behalf of Rotaract Port Klang Centennial thank you for the makan treat at Penang. It was FUN and full of great fellowship.

Malaysia Boleh!: APRRC 2007 in Malacca Malaysia

Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference (APRRC), the brainchild of PDG Alexander Mak from District 3450 Hong Kong, finally hit the Malaysian shores in a coastal town called Malacca.

I remembered attending last year’s APRRC Pilipinas event in Tagatay City, Phillippines last year. Yes, I had made new contacts and expanded my rotaract network with fellow rotaractors from district 3300 Malaysia.

Then, the real work began. Malaysia was the APRRC host for this year conference.

Being a rotaractor, we should not confine to interaction with fellow club members within a limited circle. That is why I personally decided to get involved in the APRRC Committee last year with the district to broaden my horizon.

APRRC is a mega event for Rotaract District 3300 Malaysia. In my opinion, it was a challenge for the Rotaract district 3300 Malaysia to organize the event within a short span of time. Finally, after the late nights and countless bi weekly meetings, the event finally began on August 24th 2007. It was a five days event.

Five days! Wah! Talk about being away for almost a week from home and work!.

August was a hectic month for me. Reason is I had my club installation matters two weeks before the APRRC.

I was glad that my fellow energetic club members (my fellow comrades, thank you!), Rtr Jia Thiam, Rtr Way Wen and Rtr Hannah who also participated the conference with me.

Rtr Jia Thiam and Rtr Way Wen were assign with the logistics team. Both were also appointed Sergeant At Arms (SAA) for the APRRC Opening Ceremony and also for the plenary sessions.

I was selected as rapporteur for the DRR Assembly training (full day) especially for the Asia Pacific District Rotaract Representatives (DRRs). My role was to churn out reports to Rotary International on matters and issues discussed at the DRRs assembly and training.

Day 1 begins with registration of participants from 13 countries. It was a challenge to manage the big crowd. Besides that, there was

1) Long queues at the registration counter especially if one bus of participants just came from KLIA.
2) APRRC logistic committee members had to commute to the airport at least 4-5 times a day.
3) Besides the fellow rotaractor participants, their Rotarian participants had to be taken care of especially when comes to room resort allocation.
4) Logistics, Secretariat, Venue, Liason team had to attend a meeting at 11pm each night, two days before first day of the conference
5) Rotaractor JT and Way Wen manage to get a spacious resort room after August 24th.

For the second to the fourth day, was the Rotary-Rotaract plenary session by key note speakers (Rotarians/Rotaract leaders from Asia Pacific countries). This was one of the main highlights of the conference.

What I personally like is the individual country reports from each Rotaract district presented by each country representatives. You will learn about each places of interest and the geography of the particular district and country.

I learn about MDIO (go to rotaract.net and find out what this means) and issues faced by rotaractors across Asia Pacific. This is the platform, which I hope Rotaract-Rotary issues and gap are bridged for common good.

I can never forget the cultural night event and the after hours party and dance which were one of the best programs in the APRRC. And not forget the House of Friendship.

Despite the late nights, many of the committee members got up early in the morning to continue working.

The dedication showed by all district 3300 Malaysia Rotaractors finally pulled off. During the closing ceremony, I was surprised when PDG Alexander Mak personally shakes my hand and congratulated me.

That was unforgettable. The committee had pulled this off successfully!

A Park Brightly Lit

As told by Feldman....

We reached the park 10 minutes short of 8:30pm. The first two lanterns we lit were using 2 AAA batteries each. Upon pressing the button, the lantern was lit and “It’s a small world” chime jingles. Why those chime? Hmm, at least it was better than Leanne’s other helicopter with Hello Kitty sitting in it. That chime was of gunshots followed by sirens, the ones you get in that loud car alarm which changes tune every 5 seconds. To tell you the truth, playing with those did not give me those ambience we usually get with the times we played with using candles. I have those traditional lanterns but I was lacking candles. I dropped by Giant near my workplace to pick some up but apparently it was sold out!

Anyways I was there with Diana, Leanne, Gloria, Sylvia & Pang Wee (Gloria’s boyfriend). Luckily for us, JT & Hannah came the moment we reached the park. It was like prince charming dressed in white saving the day! You know what I mean? He was literally dressed in white ok. Right, Hannah? :) Anyways he came with plenty candles and lanterns, great enough to light up 3 trees beautifully. The trees were wonderful that night! Nanthini came after a while followed by Lloyd & Li Shun. We were then joined by Shung Lee, Vivien and her 3 other friends, a total of 16 people. Oh ya, Edmund was running around with Toby, my dog which looks like a bear now that his fur is all cut unevenly by my maid. Not a bad turnout ya? :)

Some of us are chatting around the shack while some others were taking turns to play the swings and Toby was scrambling around peeing and pooing (Ew!!) Oops, sidetracked… anyways it was a lovely turnout and was nice having everyone’s company there. We had two mooncakes sponsored by my mum and Lloyd brought a mooncake and a biscuit shaped like a pig, I’m sure most Chinese have seen it before. Hannah also brought a mooncake but we didn’t manage to eat that much.

Another side story that I have to mention…. I have noticed something that caught my eye. One sad thing is there is only one toddler there celebrating with us. Where are all the other children? On the way up the park from my house, I passed by 2 houses celebrating mooncake festivals with their extended families. It may be such coincidence that they are celebrating in their house compound instead of playing outside, but there is not a single person other than us celebrating in the park. And mind you, the park was in an enclosed guarded community. I remember passing by every year seeing kids playing with their lanterns and brightening the park with colorful candles, but the atmosphere was different today. Is it by coincidence that noone was around to play at the park that day, or is people starting to be afraid to let their kids out nowadays?

Anyways, thank you all who have made it that day, it was a special occasion worth celebrating. It was also Leanne’s very first mooncake festival she celebrated and she was very happy that day. (Except maybe freaking out a little when someone wanted a hug but she shook her head real vigorous and firm!) :) Thank you all uncles & aunties! (No, you don't have to deny that you're old. Hehe!)....

Mooncakes & Tang Lungs

Visit to Sri Pentas

Rotarian Patrick Ang invited our club to join their program, a visit to Tv3. The visit was on 7 August 2007, a working day. Immediately I took leave on that day, since it has been my childhood dream to visit the Tv3.

On the day, Jia Thiam, Hannah and I from the club joined them. About 20 rotarians were there. They had chartered a bus for all of us. The bus left from Klang at 9am and reached there at about 10am. We went inside and waited until 11am for the person in charge to guide us. Then, Mr.Shafiq and Mr.Adi guided us to their presentation room. There we had a presentation on the information’s regarding Tv3 such as who are the shareholders, their competitors and so on.

Only then I realized why did Mr.Shafiq told us, “Welcome to the Sri Pentas” at the beginning. It seems that currently Tv3 building in Damansara, houses many other media officers’ as well, such as ntv7, 8TV, TV9, Fly FM, Hot FM, Berita Harian, and etc. So, our visit on that day is only to Sri Pentas Tv3.

They brought us to the Recording Studio 1, 2 & 3. These are the places where they broadcast all the programs such as Malaysia Hari Ini, Majalah 3, Berita Terkini, Buletin Utama and many more. Hannah had a chance to take picture with Ms.Ivy, one of the program hosts from TV9. Lastly, before we could leave, we had a great chance to watch the live telecast of Bizworld at 11.58am. Wow, that was a great opportunity to know how the newscaster reads the news on air. They will have the wordings going upwards in a small screen below the camera. So, it’ll be very easy for the newscasters to read the news.

We left Tv3 at 12pm and proceed to a restaurant in Serdang and had our lunch there. The lunch was sponsored by the Rotarians.

Thank you, dear rotarians! Then, we left at 1pm straight to Klang.

Although it was only a short visit to the Sri Pentas, but it was a really meaningful and memorable one.

Realizing your dream - Part 2

Cost

In order to buy your dream house, you have got to get a loan (unless of course if you have the MONEY). There are many home loans out there for you to choose, some at a higher rate but with better facilities (meaning you have the flexibility to pay more and withdraw at any point of time), some lower rates & some at fixed rates.

But all ends up with only two types of home loans:

a) the normal type based against the BLR (based lending rate) &

b) the other the fixed rate.

The normal type varies depending on the BLR, but on daily rest while the fixed rate ones are like car loan, fixed annual rate for the whole tenure. There are many online loan calculators around you can find, one example is http://mortgages.interest.com/content/calculators/monthly-payment.asp

One good thing about home loans is that you can pump in additional money if you have cash in hand to reduce your loan amount at any point of time, and this will greatly reduce the interest borne by you. A typical home loan is around 25 years, very much depending on how much you can afford to pay monthly.

Now, if your loan is RM300,000, how much do you think you’ll end up paying for your house in 25 years time, assuming there are no early payments and refinancing? Let me give you a rough calculation:

Loan amount : RM300,000
Loan tenure: 25 years
Fixed interest: 5.99% (Best available at the moment)

RM300,000 x (5.99% x 25 years) =
RM300,000 x 149.75% = RM449,250 of interest paid

This is only the figure of interest paid, mind you! As for the total amount you need to add another RM300,000 to make it:
RM449,250 + RM300,000 = RM749,250!!

A RM300,000 house you end up paying for nearly RM750,000???? Now that’s the beauty of home loans… How I wish money grew from the tree..

It’s so hard to say good bye

I was here since the very beginning: before it has a name, before it has a body, before it has a soul. It was not a club then: it was just a group of strangers.

Without rational explanation, this group of strangers decided to create and strengthen the bonds between them. So a trip to Genting was planned. It was during that trip I was unexpectedly elected as the charter president.

This group of strangers didn’t stop there. When they returned from Genting, they gathered every 2 weeks, arranged board meetings and pushed their way to get a charter certificate from Rotary International. That day was 17th May 2005, the day The Rotaract Club of Port Klang Centennial was chartered. Finally, this group of friends (no longer strangers now) was given an identity.

When we were given one of the first few tasks: raising fund for a boy who had problem walking, we got into panic. We had no idea what and how to do. Once we had the money, what should we do about it? Somehow we managed to pull it through and some valuable lessons were learned along the way.

Between work place and home, it gave me a third option to spend time fruitfully and constructively. At least once in a week, my schedule was filled with one rotaract related activity: be it club meetings, board meetings, fellowships, installations, committee meetings etc you name it.

Rotaract becomes part of my life. If Rotaract is filtered out of my life, I do not dare to imagine what will happen. I guess I will be lost or wandering around the streets aimlessly while seeking for something to kill time. Worst still, if Rotaract is thoroughly filtered, I would not have this opportunity and honour to know great friends in the club, in this district or another.

But the Chinese says 天下无不散之筵席. There is always time to say good bye. And my time with Rotaract Club of Port Klang Centennial has finally reached an interval.

I had no choice. If I could bring the whole club to China, I would. But the buckets always go to the well, not the other way round.

My dear Rotaract Club of Port Klang Centennial,

Please forgive my selfishness. I decided to abandon you to chase my dreams in China. I am not sure whether I will find what I seek. I am not sure whether I will come back in the foreseeable future. At this stage, the future is full of excitements and uncertainties.

I know you will give me your blessings. I also know you will grow stronger and larger, become more vibrant and energetic with or without me.

Right now, I have a song for you. A song that best describes my feelings right now:-

THE FORMULA FOR SUCCESS

Now here is the great news. Just like the formula for failure, the formula for success is easy to follow: Its a few simple disciplines practiced every day.Now here is an interesting question worth pondering:

How can we change the errors in the formula for failure into the disciplines required in the formula for success?

The answer is by making the future an important part of our current philosophy.Both success and failure involve future consequences, namely the inevitable rewards or unavoidable regrets resulting from past activities. If this is true, why don't more people take time to ponder the future?

The answer is simple: They are so caught up in the current moment that it doesn't seem to matter. The problems and the rewards of today are so absorbing to some human beings that they never pause long enough to think about tomorrow.But what if we did develop a new discipline to take just a few minutes every day to look a little further down the road? We would then be able to foresee the impending consequences of our current conduct. Armed with that valuable information, we would be able to take the necessary action to change our errors into new success-oriented disciplines. In other words, by disciplining ourselves to see the future in advance, we would be able to change our thinking, amend our errors and develop new habits to replace the old.One of the exciting things about the formula for success - a few simpledisciplines practiced every day - is that the results are almost immediate.
As we voluntarily change daily errors into daily disciplines, experience positive results in a very short period of time. When we change our diet, our health improves noticeably in just a few weeks.

When we start exercising, we feel a new vitality almost immediately. When we begin reading, we experience a growing awareness and a new level of self-confidence. Whatever new discipline we begin to practice daily will produce exciting results that will drive us to become even better at developing new disciplines.The real magic of new disciplines is that they will cause us to amend our thinking. If we were to start today to read the books, keep a journal, attend the classes, listen more and observe more, then today would be the first day of a new life leading to a better future.

If we were to start today to try harder, and in every way make a conscious and consistent effort to change subtle and deadly errors into constructive and rewarding disciplines, we would never again settle for a life of existence – not once we have tasted the fruits of a life of substance!

Forked path in life

Some time in life, there will always be a query of the path you have taken. I know some of you have also gone through this and made your decisions.

Lately I have been triggered to think if I should stick to the comfort and familiarity; in addition to the satisfaction and enjoyment, of my current job and life, or listen to the advice of my parents and join them in a more rewarding (money wise - to what I think so far) yet unfamiliar business. I have been querying and fearing stepping out of my circle of comfort. Too many worries plague my thoughts.

Recently, I have been suffering from some serious financial fallback and being offered a chance to earn much more than my current income does pull a trigger. I have been in my industry for almost 2 years now, and despite my complaints and long hours at work, the job satisfaction and people I work side-by-side with everyday far outweigh my dislike of work.

These are the worries that have crossed my mind while considering whether to change fields at the moment:

Fears:

1. Loss of freedom - I fear that working so closely with my parents will mean too much control by them over my social life. Silly as it may sound, this is one of my greatest fear, of being too protected.

2. The fear of 'change' - I know that change is the only thing that doesn't change in one's life (do read 'Who moved my cheese'), but I have never thought of myself as a salesperson, and insurance is certainly not the easiest thing to sell.

3. Expectations - Everyone who's been trying to encourage me to move has mentioned how lucrative the pay will be, and that the harder you work, the more rewards you'll get. But what if I do not live up to the expectations and am a lousy salesperson?

4. Loss of close interaction with workmates - being in the creative business, I've been so used to contact with 'creative' people, i.e. mad and informal. And I needed to work closely with my colleagues, therefore creating a close bond between us. We're really like a family in the office. Will I get a culture-shock working for people who have to be decent and proper all the time? Doing sales means that you have to work independently most of the time unless with your superior, in my case most likely to be daddy dearest. Not to mention that I myself will have to look prim and proper too and cannot wear anything I want to work any longer.

5. What if I really dislike the new job and want to get back to my current job again? I'll be way left behind and might have to start afresh.

However, there is still the benefits of changing jobs to consider:

1. Working with mummy and daddy means easier connections.

2. Money is better and faster than working up the corporate ladder step-by-step. So I'll get to do the shopping that I like and not worry about not having the money to pay for them.

3. I still don't have to go to work at 8a.m. (I hope)

I've mentioned to my parents to give me a few more years to enjoy my life as I really think that I might join them one day and not enjoy it then. But will it be even more difficult to fallback when I've gone that much further? And will I only be wasting my time now since I'm thinking of moving away from the industry anyway? But I've been thinking that if my pay increases (I know colleagues who earn quite a lot) and I don't need to worry about the money anymore, will I still want to move? Not likely.

So should I just try it out now and if it really doesn't work out for me, come back to advertising business again. Also, being in the lower level of the ladder means easier entry back.

I think I shall give myself another few months and see how things go in my current job before making my decision. Though some advice from those of you who are more experienced will be helpful.

Realizing Your Dream - Part 1

Imagine yourself coming back from work to your family after a tired and stressful day. You open the door to your house to be greeted by your lovely spouse and your children. You settle down for nice home-cooked dinner and after that have a refreshing bath after that. Then you head towards the living room to spend the rest of your night reading papers, watching some movies or simply just playing with your kids. When its time, you head back to your cozy room for your well deserved sleep. I am sure everyone is looking forward to a time when you can put yourself in a scenario like that.

As of now, only CP Toh, Eng Tee & I are the only married couples in the club. I am sure most of you have been thinking of settling down sooner or later. Let me share with you one important thing in life that you will be facing sooner or later. No, not how to settle down and make a family, that aspect I leave it to you. I will go through with you realizing your dream to buy a house.

Factors
Diana and I have been house hunting for sometime, specifically linked houses and condominiums. Firstly, we have to decide which area we would want to buy. Mind you, different locations are of different pricing. A place in Klang would be cheaper than a place in PJ, not to mention KL. These factors may be influenced by the location of your workplace, your budget, convenience and many more. Since Diana is working in KL and I am working in PJ, we decided to find a place in PJ.

Our decision is influenced by the convenience of getting around, the type of environment and the $ factor. Since PJ is located in between Klang and KL, we figured out it would be easier to get around. The the decision is between if you should get a landed property or a condo. Bear in mind for landed properties in PJ, you can only find old houses aging more than 10 years if you’re looking for RM400K and below. Some cheaper new ones you can find are in Puchong. And it is up to your preference, but when Diana was renting an apartment, we loved the choice of indulging ourselves with the facilities downstairs where your children can play and run around without having to drive out. These, of course, are in the expense of the monthly maintenance fees. Lastly, the $ factor. We can only manage a place around RM300K. Anything more we'll have to starve ourselves before that.

Have you ever walked in to any showrooms and thought how nice it would be if my house is this nice? Bear in mind the showrooms are fitted with one of the best interior design they can think of and all the furniture which can win your heart. Take a look at these pictures, aren’t they dazzling?

The Formula for Failure

Some insight and analysis about failure. Read on.

Failure is not a single, cataclysmic event. We do not fail overnight.

Failure is the inevitable result of an accumulation of poor thinking and poor choices. To put it more simply, failure is nothing more than a few errors in judgment repeated every day.

Now why would someone make an error in judgment and then be so foolish as torepeat it every day? The answer is because he or she does not think that it matters.

On their own, our daily acts do not seem that important. A minor oversight, a poor decision, or a wasted hour generally doesn't result in an instant and measurable impact. More often than not, we escape from any immediate consequences of our deeds.

If we have not bothered to read a single book in the past ninety days, this lack of discipline does not seem to have any immediate impact on our lives.

And since nothing drastic happened to us after the first ninety days, we repeat this error in judgment for another ninety days, and on and on it goes.

Why? Because it doesn't seem to matter. And herein lies the great danger. Far worse than not reading the books is not even realizing that it matters!

Those who eat too many of the wrong foods are contributing to a future health problem, but the joy of the moment overshadows the consequence of the future. It does not seem to matter. Those who smoke too much or drink too much go on making these poor choices year after year after year... because it doesn't seem to matter. But the pain and regret of these errors in judgment have only been delayed for a future time.

Consequences are seldom instant; instead, they accumulate until the inevitable day of reckoning finally arrives and the price must be paid for our poor choices - choices that didn't seem to matter.Failure's most dangerous attribute is its subtlety. In the short term those little errors don't seem to make any difference.

We do not seem to be failing. In fact, sometimes these accumulated errors in judgment occur throughout a period of great joy and prosperity in our lives. Since nothing terrible happens to us, since there are no instant consequences to capture our attention, we simply drift from one day to the next, repeating the errors, thinking the wrong thoughts, listening to the wrong voices and making the wrong choices.

The sky did not fall in on us yesterday; therefore the act was probably harmless. Since it seemed to have no measurable consequence, it is probably safe to repeat.

But we must become better educated than that!

If at the end of the day when we made our first error in judgment the sky had fallen in on us, we undoubtedly would have taken immediate steps to ensure that the act would never be repeated again. Like the child who places his hand on a hot burner despite his parents' warnings, we would have had an instantaneous experience accompanying our error in judgment.

Unfortunately, failure does not shout out its warnings as our parents once did. This is why it is imperative to refine our philosophy in order to be able to make better choices.

THEME: Serve with Sincerity

To start up the new year (term), this will be my first write up for our club’s new blogmaster, IPP Feldman Kuah.

Dear fellow members of RAC Port Klang Centennial,

The club’s theme of the year is SERVE WITH SINCERITY. I had chosen this theme because I believe all of us gather and unite for one common purpose, which is to serve.

From day one, as newly inducted members of the Rotary family, whether as an Interactor, Rotaractor or Rotarian, that is what we are trained to do. The Rotary movement would not exist long enough beyond 100 years if it wasn’t the sincere acts of its members to make their communities a better place.

To serve is not defined by serving the community only (by acts of charity or painting community hall walls), it also covers the act of serving as leaders, club officers or even as members of the Rotaract movement.

But what differentiates us from rest of the other Rotaractors? It is the motive behind the word SERVE. The question, do we do it with sincerity? Or do we just serve just to show the world that we are serving for the sake of being Rotaractors?

To sum it up, it is the heart and effort that we put in, participating in activities to strengthen the bond among members and the Rotaract movement, organizing projects and doing things together in unity for a common good.

Let’s serve with sincerity and be the best that we can be.

Looking up at the screen, live recorded scene of soldiers executing their mission in a dead city foreign land. Corpse were clad with flag of America. Fighting for justice? Peace? But why take so long? I wonder.

Days later:

On table, an upside-down magazine of what look like the monthly subscription of Astro . First thought came into my mind was another huge budget Hollywood movies with the profesionalism snapshots and cool dusky backdrop. Slightly over turned, it reads ‘any day I’m here could be the day I die’ with a sort of handwritten font as the theme. A special issue of Newsweek : Voices of the fallen, in a tag line above that coloured red.

Girl, This. Is. Real.

With a little tug of interest, I flipped to that page which I never believe that had my eye glued to it. There were moment where I am trying to get adjusted reality and sci-fiction while reading (no way was Newsweeks gonna write crap, right?) Reading journals of someone who knew they gonna die, but when, was really….. “something” . Person who came all way from their home, be it a fresh graduate, to an unknown land, to fight with being that are jihad-crazy, whom have a totally opossite perception value of live is also another…..“ something”, big. Every words, expression with commas, dot and exclamation mark written was scruntinized and registered that enough to bring one to imagine, however, that also only on surface. What unspoken was left untold and forever burried.

What came flash to my mind was anguished and over-reacted emotions from families and love ones when they uncovered the truth. What’s more for a single mother to break the news and explain the gone of their daddy to their child whom barely understand the whole truth, which is a tremendously devastating.

Below are journals that written by the respective soldiers that I was moved by, before they are gone. (choose to type it out instead of providing the link. Well, it can be argued the other way tho, :P)

MICHEAL G. MIHALAKIS

I don’t even recognise myself anymore. Completely shaved head, Army uniforms and zero fats. I try to remember who I used to be. Every soldiers is going through the same change. It doesn’t better who you are: prom queen, high school football star, scholar, idiot, or whatever. As soon as you get here, you become the copy of the person next to you. (pg.24,1st column)

. . . it is so hard to tell a straving 5 year old who is begging for food to go away. Finally I gave in. A sickly barefooted 6 year old approached the vehicles, touching his lips saying “please,please”. I told him to go away and he just looked up at me. It looked like he wasn’t going to make it much longer in the 133-degree weather. Again I shouted “ kief!!” (go-in Arabic). As we drove away, I threw an ice-cold bottle of water out of the window to him.Lucily no one saw me. (pg.25,1st column)

- Mihalakis died of injuries sustained when his Humvee overturned. He was 18.

JESSE A.GIVENS

We are heading into a bad place, I guess. We have a bunch of want-to-be GI Joes who say they cant wait to kill someone.Personally I don’t give a s—t if we kill someone or never fire a shot. I don’t want medals or to be a hero. I just want to come home and be a husband and daddy again. (pg.24,1st column)

- Givens was drowned on May-1. “Bean” was born 4 weeks later.

KENNETH M.BALLARD

There are some times here that you are able to stop and look around and find a moment of peace. We were crossing the Tigris River at night under a full moon. The light breeze floated through the trees. You think to yourself how nice this would be with someone special, then flares light up the sky and you see tracer fire off in the distance and the cold slap of reality sets in that ou are in the middle of a war zone. (pg.25,2nd column)

- Ballard died when a passing tree branch triggered the unmanned machine gun on his tank.

PATRICK TAINSH

After 9 hours in the heat with 80 pounds on your back, you don’t want to do much except sleep when you get back.People out here are SOMETHING ELSE. They just don’t care that other people trying to help them. I guess that’s the face of war, and yes, it’s still a war. Don’t believe everthing you see on TV.(pg.26,2nd column)

KANE M. FUNKE

Hi mom, sorry it’s been so long since I’ve last called. I’m fine, but I got story to tell you. . . . . . . I usually sit inside behind the driver but they wanted me up in the turrent on the gun today. So, I’m the only one exposed to the outside. One our way back to go to Bronze, a blast hit us, knocked me out and slammed me agaist the gun, and they said I fell lifelessly down into the hummer. They shook me and turned me all over looking for blood but there was none. “FUNKE get back on the gun, damn it! Get back on the gun.” I got up and got back on the gun. I was ok. Your boy’s alive mom. (pg.32,1st column)

- Funke was killed in action about 2 weeks before he was scheduled to leave Iraq.

May those earn my salute, rest in peace.. Widows, single-parent child, parents who’s love ones that involved, may many cherish moment lies ahead and so does for the next generation.

The World ain't all Sunshine and Rainbows

I watched the movie “Rocky Balboa” for the 2nd time yesterday. A lot of people criticise this movie, saying there’s little action and too much drama. I am no movie critic and I don’t intend to give a movie review here.

But that’s one part of the movie that struck me hard and deeply disturbed me. It’s at 1 hour and 1 minute of the movie.

It’s a scene where Rocky and his son walked out of Rocky’s restaurant. Rocky had earlier announced his intention of fighting the reigning Boxing World Heavyweight Champion.

The son started by asking whether Rocky was nervous about the fight. Rocky replied, “scared to death” but nevertheless he had to do it.

The son got so mad that he started shouting at his father. The son said it has not been easy living with Rocky. “People see me but they see you” the son said. That’s the reason he had a decent job and that’s the reason why people deal with him. It’s all because his father is Rocky. And now, with the fight, the situation is going to get worst. It will hurt him more.

He asked Rocky, as a favour, not to go through with the fight as it will do Rocky and himself no good.

Rocky, after being shouted at by his own son, remained calm. He thought for a few seconds. Then he raised his right hand and said this to his son (I quote in verbatim):-

You ain’t gonna believe this. You used to fit right here (pointing at his right palm). I hold you up and say to your mother: this kid is going to be the best kid in the world. This kid is going to be somebody better than anybody known. And you grow up, good and wonderful. It’s great just watch it everyday, it’s like a privilege.

When the time comes for you to be your own man and take on the world, then you did. But somewhere along the line, you changed. You stopped being you. You let people stick a finger on your face and tell you, you are no good. And when things got hard, you started looking for something to blame, like a big shadow.

Let me tell you something you already knew. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place. I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me are no body. It’s going to hit as hard as life.

But it ain’t about how hard you hit; it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how it’s done.

Now, if you know what’s you’re worth then go out to get what’s you’re worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits and not pointing fingers say: you ain’t what you want to be because of him or her or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain’t you. You are better than that!

The above conversation hit me hard. It’s the highlight of the whole movie.

Life is tough. It is never easy to squeeze yourself into it and find a rightful place of your own.

What Rocky had just said to his son, I felt as if he was talking to me. Wasn’t I looking for something or someone to blame whenever I think I was not given something I deserve? Didn’t I cowardly avoid the hits and stay complacent in my own comfort zone knowing very well that there is a bigger world out there that is waiting for me to explore, to venture and to find my flag?

In the movie, Rocky found himself losing something. It’s the energy he once had. He decided to jump out of his comfort zone (manning the Italian Restaurant) and take on the world champion. Of course he lost in the fight but that’s secondary and largely immaterial. He had the guts to walk into the ring again, to go through the gruelling training, to risk the humiliation, to face his own fear etc. That, to me, is much more important than winning the fight.

I hope the above conversation somehow gives you some booster and motivation. Those of you who have the DVD, I suggest you to fast forward to the above scene (at 1hr 1min mark), and appreciate it.

I am going to remember that.

DRA - Final day!

I was worn-out the moment I opened up my eyes. We’re supposed to be at the hall by 9.00am, but I was too tired to realize that. Somehow, I managed to drag myself out from my bed and headed straight to the cafeteria with Yiip Shaun. Way Wen were still fast asleep. I thought that I’ll be the only rotaractors left at the cafeteria. Nevertheless, to my amazement that there are others at the cafeteria doing their little business as if that they’re not late at all. I felt relief.

I rushed myself to the hall to hear the briefing. I was shocked to see an employee from 8TV eventually gave a talk about her career. The talk was short. Nevertheless, I’ve learned something new.

The speech giving session ended up quicker than I thought while the rest of the rotaractors exchanged email address and hand phone number with one another. Yiip Shaun told us that his dad wanted to leave Penang early. That leaves us no choice but to get ourselves pack as soon as possible. That means no lunch for us. The moment we load our luggage in to the car, Yiip Shaun dad asked us

Uncle: You guys don’t want to have your lunch?

Jia Thiam: Huh? (Thought you want to leave early. How to makan lar)

Uncle: Since you’ve paid for it, don’t waste it.

Jia Thiam: What about you Uncle? (So, you want to leave now or makan now?)

Uncle: Don’t worry about us. Just go have your lunch

Jia Thiam: Ermmm!

Something sounded very fishy. Anyway, we went for lunch and enjoyed them. I took a final glimpse at my surrounding and my newly-made friends, knowing that I won’t be seeing them, not until APRRC. We left Penang at 1.30pm and the journey took us hours to arrive due to the fact that Chin Ming was celebrated on the very same day. Cars filled up the whole road and that is when I knew, I won’t be arriving home early. We reached Klang at 11.30pm and had dinner after that.

My day at DRA is finally over.

DRA - Day 2

I woke up surprisingly early knowing that I went to bed late last night. My stomach started making weird noise. That is when I knew that I needed food so badly. After settling myself, I went straight down to the cafeteria, in hoping that I’ll finally be able to treat myself to a nice breakfast. The food to my amazement was a delicious one with a variety of choice one can choose on.

Anyway, once my hunger has been satisfied, I headed straight to the hall for a Rotaract briefing. The briefing went on for hours without showing any significant sign that it will end. During the session, some of my newly–made friends came asking me,

A: “Why your Rotaract Club is so special ah? Got the word centennial at the back of it
wan.”
Jia Thiam: Yeah hor. I also don’t know

Sad to say that I have no answer to that question myself. Being a member of the club and not knowing how this club came about, truly putted me down to shame in front of the others. Nevertheless, I made an attempt to seek out the answer to that question by asking Rotaractor Hui Hui. Then I’ve finally realized that our club was chartered during the centennial year.

Rotaractor Hui Hui were one of the panelists during the session. When her turn has finally arrived, she stated that our club had our own club song- adopted from our Rotary Club of Port Klang Centennial. Way Wen and I were later requested to walk to stage to sing our club song. Singing in front of the mirror or in my bathroom is a norm thing to do but not on stage. I had butterfly in my stomach, yet I carried on. After we’ve finished with our songs, our club has instantaneously been recognized by many others for being the only club who went on stage to sing a club song. I was proud.

Lunch was equally good as well. But soon after lunch, we had our own Training program to attend. All of us went to our separate ways. As for me, I’ll be attending the Community Service Director training. I told myself that this will be a training I will never forget in my life. I made friends during the training and we even worked in pairs to come up with solution to a case study. Our solution will be analyzed by the trainees and pointed out on how we can further improve them. After hours have passed, the session ended. Way Wen wanted to treat himself to a nice game of volleyball with the other rotaractors where else I wanted to try out Jet-Skiing. As for Yiip Shaun he was no where to be found after the session ended. Anyway, we wouldn’t bother much and just carried on with our plan. Jet-Skiing have burn a deep hole in my pocket. Nevertheless, the RM25.00 spent will truly last in my memories. Thought that I never had enough, I went for a banana boat ride after that.

I was soaked wet from head to toe. All the rotaractors just wanted to have their little fun at the sea. Hui Hui became victim and was thrown into the sea. Every single rotaractors found on the beach have been thrown into the sea EXCEPT Way Wen. He was fast enough to avoid capture. Anyway, you can’t tell others that you’ve been to Penang without actually tasting Penang sea water. Shortly after that, I went back to my room to have a quick shower. I badly need them right now. I was smartly dress on that night due to the fact that I’ll be attending a classy dinner.

Dinner finished quite late and everyone is busy taking pictures with one another. I later hanged out at DRR Chandra’s room where we treat ourselves to a game of card. Ended up, I slept at 2.00 in the morning.

One Two Ouch!

three four, Ouch! That was exactly what I had in mind as I drove down to Klang that fine evening for an introductory class at the XXX dance club.
(don't eiyer me la! it just slipped off my mind but i'm confidently sure that the tutor's name was sohurtoe)

Also, did I mention tt i was initially going to catch the new airbus A380 there because of the traffic but i opt.ed to drive instead?
No thanks to the new 100ml of liquid per passenger onboard rule.
My bladder had twice the amount of that, thus i was unnecessarily denied from the plane.

One Up! for you MAS and nope, that's definitely not my thumb.

Now, a lil bit on salsa.
Its a sexy, dazzingly dizzy ditsy kind of dance that turns people on.
On a less obscene note, salsa is truly a leisurely fun activity for the modern society, a step-up from collecting stamps and coins.
If society had not evolved, where touching hands equals to adultery and marriages.. I swear i wouldnt have left the centre alive.

Fast forward a lil and we were all in 2 lines, face to face with our salsa partners. Previously, some had fantasized to dance with girls other than their spouses but... alas! they moaned, silently. There were also some who just grabbed anybody closest to them like a cold blooded brute *cough* *cough*JT

Those were the steps tt was patiently taught to us and the names had been changed to avoid lawyers breathing down my neck.
Having said that, one of them already did, religiously, for this article that is.

Now.... cum to think of it hor, never in all these years have I ever hated being vertically challenged.
That night.. alas! I realised tt i coudln spin a girl without exposing every inch of my underarms.
However, I reckon this is not as bad as what the vertically blessed hated - being distracted by u n c o n t r o l l a b i l i n g l y counting dandruffs from their partner's scalp instead of dancing steps. evilLOLakakaka

yet despite all that,

due to the nature of the dance which promotes closeness, ignites passion and reignites lust, u can actually tell whether a guy and a girl is in an intimate fiery r/s.kudos! prez..you make us men proud !ppffwwwtit! err not saying that you have dandruffs diana your hair looks great but errr i think i better shuddup!... will you still betroth babyleeann to me? :( Nevertheless u can also tell whether a person is hum sup or te ko pe as well la. *cough* *cough*JT

I have to admit that i was initially not comfortable with this salsa thing cos just like jumping jacks need wounded springs and evil marathon rabbits need duracell, i needed booze to shake my brittle joints
... but i was sober tt night :/ or rather, my hands had to be kept sober.

This is all thanks to the friendliness of the salsa tutor, mr sohurtoe and the rest of the participants who danced equally as bad.

SOo... I dunno about the rest of you but i was counting salsa steps instead of sheeps when i hit the sack that night. Ladies, on behalf of the guys, thank you for not leaving us with sore-toe/s.

And to the lovely beaus whom I had the chance to dance with, it was a great pleasure and i hope ya'll had an enjoyable night! ^^

Without Fear or Favour (Season 2) Part 4

My case was not the first to be called. Luckily, I had the opportunity to observe other cases and learn.

Most of the detainees were not represented. When their names were called up by the interpreter, they were hauled into the “kandang OKT (Orang Kena Tuduh)” then left there alone to face the entire legal system, helplessly.

The Police then present the application for remand order to the Magistrate. The reasons forwarded by the police to justify further remand are very standard and monotonous i.e.

“polis tiada cukup masa untuk melengkapkan siasatan dan memerlukan lebih masa” that is the standard line uttered by the police. Surprisingly, the Magistrate would entertain such request and remand orders are normally granted.

There were a few cases that shocked me. There were two Indian men in their 40s or 50s being called up. The police applied to remand these two poor souls for further 14 days. What was the reason? I almost fell off the chair when I listened to the reasons advanced by the police. It was this:

“pihak polis masih belum mendapat laporan urin daripada jabatan kimia, oleh itu masih tidak dapat menentu sama ada terdapat bahan dadah di dalam urin. Minta reman dilanjutkan selama 14 hari.”

What?! The police was not sure whether the detainees were taking drugs yet the detainees were detained and their liberty taken away for 14 days because of the inefficiency of the police and the Chemistry Department. God help these poor souls. Man, you really don’t want to mess with the police, especially if you are innocent.

Almost half an hour later, after a dozen detainees’ names had been called up, it was finally my turn to stand up and defend my client.

I could feel the enormous pressure building on my shoulders. To defend and safeguard the liberty of a man is way too heavy for me. In a civil suit, when you lose a case, the worst thing that could happen to your client is to pay money. But if I am unable to convince the court why further remand is not necessary, my client Andy will end up behind bars and that is something I could not bring home and sleep with it.

I stated my name for record and informed the court that I act for Andy. The police started:

“Tuan, ini kes ugutan dan gangguan keamanan awam. Polis masih belum jalankan siasatan yang lengkap. Minta reman selama 5 hari.”

The Magistrate recorded what the police just said then turned to me, “ada bantahan?”

“Ya, tuan Majistret. Saya membantah reman order terhadap anakguam saya. Tuan, setahu saya, anakguam saya telah ditahan pada pukul 2 pagi semalam. Dan sehinnga kini, tiada apa-apa kenyataan diambil daripada anakguam saya. Masa telah dibazirkan oleh pihak polis dan polis kini datang ke Mahkamah yang mulia ini untuk melanjutkan reman tanpa apa-apa alasan yang kukuh selain daripada alasan yang remeh dan kosong.

Tuan, anakguam saya adalah pada semua masa berkenaan bersedia untuk bekerjasama dengan polis untuk membantu siasatan. Jika anakguam saya dilepaskan, tiada apa-apa bukti yang menunjukkan bahawa anakguam saya akan lari diri atau tidak dapat dihubungi untuk membantu siasatan. Oleh itu, anakguam saya tidak perlu diremankan di dalam lokap untuk membantu siasatan. Sekiranya kenyataan anakguam saya diperlukan, pihak polis boleh menghubungi anakguam saya dan anakguam saya akan datang ke balai polis untuk memberi kerjasama kepada pihak polis dalam siasatan kes ini.

Tambahan lagi, pihak polis tidak dapat menunjukkan apa-apa alasan untuk menyokong reman selama 5 hari ini. Kes yang melibatkan anakguam saya bukanlah satu kes yang rumit atau kompleks. Polis tidak perlu 5 hari untuk menjalankan siasatan. Ini adalah jelasnya satu penyalahgunaan proses mahkamah.”

Wow! I thought that was pretty good for a first timer.

The police replied, “Tuan, polis tidak mengambil kenyataan sehingga kini adalah kerana pihak polis ingin memberi rehat secukupnya kepada dia dan tidak mahu ganggu masa rehatnya.” (Wow, that was a very noble excuse)

The Magistrate busy jotting down everything we have just said. I turned to Andy and gave him a sign that we are doing good and he will be coming out soon, don’t worry.

The Magistrate reread what he had just written then scanned the police, me and Andy. Once he had made up his mind, he ruled, “reman diberikan selama 3 hari”

I could not maintain my balance and needed to grab the corner of the table for support.

3 days? Did you know how it was like to live in the lockup for even one day? Andy was held for one night and he almost went crazy.

I turned to look at Andy. Apparently, he did not know what was going on. He jerked his head to give me a “what’s going on?” sign. I walked slowly beside him and whispered, “they will remand you for a further 3 days.”

“I am not coming out now?” he sadly asked.

“I’m afraid not” I tried to calm myself too.

Andy did not say anything. He stared blindly into the ceiling. I guess he was thinking, “how am I going to survive these 3 days?”

The police handcuffed Andy and led him out of the courtroom and into a minivan where Andy will be traveled to the lockup, his home for the next 3 days.

When the minivan left the court, I saw his parents walking up the hill to Klang Court.

Ooh… I have a lot of explanation to do…

1st Day of DRA 2007

District Rotaract Assembly (DRA) has never popped up into my head all this while not until today. What is DRA? What are the activities held during DRA? These are the questions which I kept pondering upon. I had my first District Event during the District Rotaract Conference (DRC). I was uncertain whether should I register my name as one of the candidate. I was scared that my RM180 will go down into the drain after realizing that this money are better spent off to a sumptuous Sushi at Sushi King. I would have never taken part in such event, if it’s not for the constant begging from Rotaractor Way Wen. Somehow, I gave in to Way Wen’s request. Since then, I can’t pull back anymore; else others will just categorize me as a liar. During the final day of my DRC, I was telling myself, “Hey! It wasn’t so bad at all. I learn many new things. I’ve made new friends and I’m definitely joining the District Rotaract Assembly (DRA)”.

Thus, I had my first hand experience during the DRA 2007 held at Tanjung Bungah. The journey there seems like an endless journey. Time and tide waits for no men. I wanted to appreciate every moment I had, spent by making new friends at DRA. Anyway, the journey took us 4 hour plus plus. Upon arriving there, I take a quick glimpse on the surrounding of the hotel. The beach caught my concentration but I had with me, my luggage. That leaves me no choice but to get myself registered first. The registration counter was held in a small room, three storeys above the ground floor. After checking in, I was told that Way Wen will be my roommate while Yiip Shaun will be stuck with a Subang Rotaractor for the coming three days and two nights. After they handed over my room key, I head straight back to my room to check it out.

I was shocked to be given such a huge room enough to accommodate at least six more rotaractors comfortably. My room had a good view of the sea. What more could I expect but to felt grateful knowing that I’m going to enjoy myself for the coming three days. After settling down, I head straight down to the sea. Had a short walk along the beach with Way Wen and I finally went up to my room to have a bath leaving Way Wen behind. Shortly after my bath, Way Wen came back. Heard from him that he was playing volleyball with the other rotaractors. I was stunned for 2.56 seconds knowing that if I had not taken my bath, I would be able to mix around with the other rotaractors. Anyway, Way Wen had his bath and we headed down to grab our dinner. We had our ice-breaking session after dinner. Supposedly to be held by the beach but the weather changed for a sudden. Strong ferocious wind kept blowing towards us and we’re expecting a heavy rain. The thought of the next tsunami kept running through my mind. Anyway, Ice-breaking session was held in a room. Everything went smoothly till I received a call from Yiip Shaun that his pal was somewhere in Penang . We were later brought by his friend to else where to have a taste of true Penang local food.

The Lion, The Crow, The Ant, and The Monkey (Part 1)

Rotaract, like any other organization in this world, is often populated by interesting creatures of intent and display. I'm sure you may have encountered several kinds by now.

Before you start jumping to conclusion or assumption, the purpose of my writing and sharing of this story is neither to label nor expose the many friends and acquaintances I've known in Rotaract. Like any good story should, my hope is you will find this story both educational and enjoyable to read (the sort of stuff Walt Disney's are made of).

Thus, allow me to begin.

Once upon a time, as I journeyed through the forest. . . . . I met the Lion, the Crow, the Ant, and the Monkey congregating one afternoon. With sincere curiousity, I asked of their purpose for this gathering. "We're discussing issues that are affecting this forest, and things that we can do to make this forest a better place to live in", explained the Monkey. They seemed so happy to see me and with utmost sincerity invited me to join them. I obliged.

During the discussion I observed. The Lion was most obvious trying to lead the pack, and let out a few roars when necessary. The Monkey was making a scene out of everything and everyone, including itself. The Ant was in its quiet self, listening. The Crow was somehow occupied with its own interest, picking on the ground. It was an interesting scene nevertheless. The day ended with a few topics being deliberated and a handful of suggestions offered. I was informed we would meet again 2 weeks from that day.

It was exactly 2 weeks from the last gathering. It nearly slipped my mind until the Crow flew by and reminded me about the gathering, and offered to ferry me there. The Crow and I were the first to arrive at the gathering point, then the Lion came walking in gracefully just before the tiny Ant. We waited for a few wind, but the Monkey was no where to be seen. The Lion insisted we wait for the Monkey, the Ant didn't mind, but the Crow was deeply unhappy. As for me, being a new member of this congregation, sat there quietly while letting nature takes its course. Finally, out of nowhere, appeared the Monkey. 'Better late than never' seem to be the order of the day.

We debated, negotiated, and finally confirmed, we shall make a visit to the Frog at the nearby pond to render whatever service we may to the community there. 7 days from that day we were to gather at this place before proceeding to the pond. The Crow was chosen to lead this excursion as he was the most familar and knowledgable about the pond.

The day arrived. We started our journey and reached our destination without much struggle, except the Monkey was no where to be found again. Apparently, it got lost along the way or somehow distracted. We met the Frog and expressed our purpose of the visit. The Frog thanked us and showed us the state of the pond he lives in. It was filled with waste disposed off by irresponsible creatures. The Crow suggested we help the Frog clean up the pond before sunset. The Ant quietly began to collect dead leafs floating on the pond, while the Crow targetted the foreign objects such as bottles and wrappers. The Lion seemed to find it difficult in wanting to get his paws dirty from non-hunting work, and the Monkey can't seem to decide what to do with his long arms and settled to do a few of everything.

This is the scene of fauna from different species working together for a common deed.

End of story.

What is the moral of the story?
The Crow may not be the most beautiful bird, but it's wise and willing to work.
The Lion may be mighty and full of charisma, but may not be willing to get dirty.
The Ant may be small and quiet, but works well with others and a good executionist.
The Monkey may be disoriented and playful, but it can add vibrance to an otherwise boring scene.

Making New Friends

To be honest with you, initially I was very reluctant to join RYLA. I did not show any enthusiasm at all and I think that was felt by Eric too. The main reason was that I do not like mixing with strangers not to mention that I have to stay with strangers for 4 days! I am really content with my life and I thought with the current friends I have now, I have more than enough.

Anyway, as I was stuck somewhere in Kajang for 4 days, I have no choice but to take the initiative to know some new strangers. I surprised myself. I did not know that my communication skill was really that good. Once I was used to shaking hands and starting a brief conversation with absolute strangers, making new friends seems to be a very easy task. All we need are a sincere smile and the burning curiosity to find out more about the stranger.

I have made a lot of friends in RYLA. You know why I had problem waking up in the morning? That’s because we chat all night at the foyer, in the bedroom (by the way, the rules say that boys are not supposed to go into guys’ room and vice versa but all the rules were badly broken). And throughout these chit-chatting, our relationship progressed from mere acquaintances to friends.

We took down the contact numbers and email of everyone, and we promised to keep in touch and probably organise something like a alumni in future.

My Observation, Feelings and Experience

I must give credit to the Organising Committee for they have done a fairly good job in organising RYLA 2005. Thank you. Nonetheless, I would like to take this opportunity to record some of my constructive criticisms.

The whole RYLA was too relaxed. I know we are all adults so that we should not be monitored like schoolboys. But there at least should be a balance. I opine that the Organising Committee had been too relaxed in time keeping. Or they themselves were late sometime. I hope this is something the next organising committee of RYLA could look into. Punctuality should be something RYLA emphasise most.

Ok, I am done with criticisms. If you were cautious, you would have noticed that some of my criticisms had been secretly embodied in the main body above. So, I’ll give the Organising Committee a break. Nice Job & Syabas!

As you all would agree that life is a journey. We are unable to determine the length of this journey but fortunately we have the freedom to decide the width of it. We have the freedom, the privilege to decide what we want to see, feel, learn, contribute in this journey.

If there is only one thing I’ve learnt from RYLA that would be: dare to take the sudden turn. I took my sudden turn here when I decided to wake up and drive to Permata on 24/3/2005. It significantly or maybe forever changes the path and route of my journey. Should I decided to go to work on 24/3/2005 and continue with my routine life, maybe I would still be the same i.e. being robbed of this wonderful experience and opportunity unknowingly.

DRA: We learn, We Interact and That’s it?

I remembered my first District Rotaract Assembly (DRA) in HolidayVilla, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur in year 2005. That was few months after my club obtained its charter. The venue was near to my place of work. So it was a blessing. But, it turned out that I had to return to office in the morning because of an urgent deadline.

And because of that, I missed my first group photo session after the opening ceremony.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed myself getting to know new faces from different club (although I feel odd at first fitting in)

Did I learn something there? Yes, I admit I did learn a lot about rotaract. For my first DRA, I attended the President/ President Elect/ Vice President Workshop with my club chartered president.

I remembered brainstorming solutions during the case study session. It is a norm for Rotaract club leaders to face problems like:

1) Inactive members and lack of participation in projects (Very common)
2) In ability to retain current members. (So common)
3) Difficulty in finding new members to ensure club continuity. (Common)

In DRA in Penang few weeks back, I attended the President/ President Elect workshop for the second time (because I did not hold any club office position for year 2006).

This time round, there was no case studies session (thank you GDL DRR Chandra and GDL DRRE Dinesh). What I had was more of an opinion sharing session by the incoming club presidents, president elects and vice presidents.

They do share the same doubts and fears like me. I would not know whether my fellow incoming board that went to the DRA training with me learned about such issues.

The common topics raised were lack of active members to commit and take up projects

I also listened to complaints by the respective district officers (who are also leaders in their club too) who raised issue like lack of participation in organized district projects and other interpersonal relationship problems.

What I can summarise is this = the survival of rotaract clubs purely depends on common factor – degree of interpersonal relationship among its members.

I was given the opportunity to be a panelist speaker in the morning plenary session led by PDG Dato Dr Low Teong. Title was how to build effective rotaract club. I spoke about from my club’s perspective on effective rotaract club based on email input from RAC Port Klang members.

All in all, it turned out that all the panelist speakers (IPDRR Jamie, DRC and incoming DRC and myself) got the feedback from the audience what we have presented does not match with the current situation faced by the district rotaract clubs.
(I don’t have to mention this, but I am sure readers will know what I mean)

In a nutshell, it ain’t a blue sky picture! And it is a reality.

And this case, why are we attending the DRA? Is there a common solution to solve human relationship issue?

Problems will never get solved if there is continuous bickering. Projects will never be executed if members don’t want to do it.

In this case, the DRA is just a platform for us to gather, learn, have fun and that’s it?

I had to make this sweeping statement => Have anyone ponder to put the knowledge to good use by serving well and building relationships?

In essence, joining a non profit organization like rotaract is actually one of the ways to learn to build relationships, formed new friendships and be a better person and leaders in our own field.

We have to learn to give and accommodate with members that come from different background, age group, financial standing, personality, beliefs, attitude and culture.

It is never easy building and strengthening human relationships. It is never easy being a leader because being human, leaders can make grave mistakes.

As I am writing this article I realized I am still learning.

I will bear in mind to learn how to adapt to difficult situations and face potential setbacks.
Nevertheless we as rotaractors must always strive to be a better person and hoping someday we are able to see the blue sky picture i.e. strong and effective rotaract clubs.

Klang Bak Kut Teh really taste good!

Despite the missing luggage, everyone’s mood seemed ok when we took our breakfast at one Bak Kut Teh restaurant the next morning. Maybe the bak kut teh was too good.

The first contingency of the day? Yes, it came right after we finished our breakfast. Joe (a former Rotaractor from Ipoh who wanted to join us) called me and said he just woke up and asked whether we could wait for him in Klang while he traveled down to Klang from Old Klang Road by KTM Komuter. That would take at least 1 hour!

It was already 915am. Our initial plan was to reach Lata Kinjang Waterfall by 11 something then proceed to lunch at around 1pm. Now we’ll have to wait in Klang for another 1 hour meaning all our programme will have to be delayed for at least an hour.

I was not too happy with Joe but I did not want to spoil anyone’s mood so I faked a smile. Now I have to think of something for the Taiwanese friends to do to kill that 1 hour.

Luckily Klang KTM station is situated near “Little India” (an area well known for selling Indian goods, foods, clothing etc). We could tour Little India for an hour! Things like Indian saree, roti canai etc fascinated them.

Joe finally arrived one and a half hour later and as a result we only managed to take our lunch at 3pm (poor Taiwanese Rotaractors were starved to death but they did not complain as they thought it was our Malaysian culture taking lunch at 3pm…. my God)

After lunch we went straight to Cameron Highland. In Cameron Highland another contingency popped up. Due to the sudden change of weather and temperature (it was 38 degree in Lata Kinjang Waterfall and only 22 degree in Cameron Highland), 2 Taiwanese Rotaractors fell sick. One caught a cold and the other one had severe sore throat. Bringing them to clinic was not my original plan but nevertheless had to.

The next day after visiting strawberry farm, it started raining cats and dogs. We were trapped in the farm and were very hungry. 15 minutes later we decided not to wait anymore but asked the bus driver to drive the bus up the hill and pick us up instead. We patiently waited for the bus. But half an hour has gone and the bus was no where to be seen!

Finally the bus driver walked to us (without the bus) and informed us, “steering patah, brek cabut”. I immediately thanked the rain: if not because of the rain, we would have gone into the bus, down the slippery slopes then only realized “steering patah, brek cabut”. What would have happened to us then? I did not want to imagine.

What now? We were stuck in middle of no where, raining heavily, empty stomach and with a bus which has broken steering and defective brakes. Later we received call from President Feldman that the missing luggage that was supposed to be sent to him this afternoon had not arrived and MAS said it would probably take another day. Toying with the possibility that they might never recover their luggage, the Taiwanese Rotaractors had difficulty breathing.

Oh God! This was supposed to be an enjoyable trip! Not an EQ challenged quest! I then received a sms from President Feldman: “OC, this really ve been a great EQ challenge for u and those involved. Well who knows what will happen 2morrow? Anyway I will sink with u guys 2morrow if the motorboat dysfunction LOL!...” Yeah… very encouraging, President.

What did we do? Stay tuned.

GSE Team RY2007-2008 to Hokaido, Japan

Dear Rotaractors,

For the next Rotary year, there will be a GSE Team from our District which will be be going to Hokaido, Japan. Every year, our district will match with different districts around the world for the above program.

The Group Study Exchange (GSE) program of The Rotary Foundation is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 and in the early years of their professional lives.

The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits between paired areas in different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.

Eligibility Criteria

Team members must:

> > be between the ages of 25-40;

> > be employed full-time in a recognized profession;

> > not be a Rotarian, honorary Rotarian, or employee of Rotary or the lineal descendant or spouse of a lineal descendant, a Rotarian, an honorary Rotarian, or an employee of Rotary;

> > not be the spouse of another team member;

> > not be an ex-Rotarian or the lineal descendant or spouse of a lineal descendant of an ex-Rotarian or ex-Rotary employee who resigned less than 36 months before the time of application.

Ideal Candidates

Ideal team members are:

> > between the ages of 25 and 40;

> > employed full-time in a recognized profession;

> > a citizen of the country in which they reside;

> > in good health;

> > neat in appearance and able to express themselves clearly and logically;

> > of a sound, general educational background;

> > interested in and clearly enthusiastic about their chosen vocation and in possession of outstanding vocational skills;

> > open-minded, tolerant, and flexible;

> > proficient in the major language of the partner district;

> > comfortable working as part of a team with a schedule that is physically and emotionally demanding.

Without fear or favour (Season 2) Part 3

For the benefit of new readers, here are part 1 and part 2.

I was not the only lawyer in the courtroom. There were another two sitting on the seats reserved for lawyers.

I pulled out a chair next to one Chinese lawyer who appeared to be in his late 40s. The reason of me sitting next to him was not to make new friend but to learn from him at light speed everything about Remand Order. But I could not act like a stupid ignorant young lawyer cause that will give Andy extra stress thinking that the only friend who could help him right now was actually not knowing what he was doing (which happened to be the truth).

I broke the ice by introducing myself. His name was Kwok. Acting like I was frustrated to be dragged into the court at this hour by my client and pretending to be a seasoned criminal lawyer, I said, “I hate doing Remand Order, simple thing but have to wait so long, wasting time, don’t you think?”

Kwok was trying to be polite, “yeah, but that’s what we do. No choice”

“What’s your case about?” I started my pursue on digging knowledge out of him.

“Oh, my client was accused of assaulting his neighbour. Stupid case. It was just the normal fight between neighbours.”

“Yeah, stupid I know, but when was your client being detained?”

“Since last night around 9pm”

“How long the police want to remand him further?”

Kwok looked at me very strangely.

Oh! That was a very stupid question! I immediately regretted asking it. The police will not tell you in advance for how long they want to further remand the suspect, they will also not tell you why they want to remand him. You will only find out when your matter is called up and the police present their papers to the Magistrate. That question really made me looked like a rookie.

I saw a copy of Criminal Procedure Code inside Kwok’s briefcase then I realised I hadn’t got the opportunity to read the exact wordings of section 117 which deals with Remand Order. I came to Klang court straight after a meeting in Petaling Jaya, I hadn’t had the time to get back to my office library to do the necessary research.

It was rather shameful to ask a fellow lawyer for a copy of the Criminal Procedure Code in court as it was basic rule that all criminal lawyers should have studied the sections like the back of their hands.

Nevertheless, I had no choice but to ask Kwok if I could have his Criminal Procedure Code for awhile.

I have not touched Criminal Procedure Code since I finished my CLP exam.

The Chinese proverb is very true: you only realise you have not acquired sufficient knowledge by the time you need to apply it.

I speed read the relevant sections at the same time trying to digest its meaning. It was not a pleasant job. The feeling was like entering the exam hall only to find out you had missed out one important chapter which the teacher had earlier hinted that substantial questions will be coming out from there.

“Lagi 5 minit, Tuan Majistret akan keluar, siapa ada handphone tolong padamkan” the bailiff shouted.

Five more minutes?

I turned and looked at Andy who was staring at me. He was so helpless. To make him feel better (and indirectly also make me feel better), I nodded at him and put up a “ok” sign, in a very ironic way, telling him everything was going to be alright.

Just when I tried to chew up more sections from the Criminal Procedure Code, I heard the bailiff shouted, “Court! Bangun……”

The Magistrate had come out from his chamber.

Whoosh! In the courtroom there is no room for weakness and timidity. Someone’s liberty was at stake and I was entrusted to safeguard it. I felt my shoulders heavier and my stomach turned upside down.

About D3500 Goodwill Visit Part 1

Before reading this article, I humbly request readers to read my earlier related writing.

Though writing against the backdrop of the recently concluded D3500 goodwill visit, I am not giving details of the visit here but rather the general feelings, experience, observation, valuable lessons that I learned throughout this visit.

If there is only one lesson I learned through this project it will be this: you can’t plan or figure everything out. In another words, you must ever prepare for sudden changes or contingencies.

As a leader, you can plan everything you could think of, from A to Z but at the time of execution, things may not go in accordance to plan. To be a good leader, you must immediately accept and assess the situation rather than to complain or frown upon it. I now give example.

I do know that flight may be delayed. I was ready for that. But what I have never thought of was it could be delayed for more than 8 hours. That practically threw all the programme for the day down the drain. We wasted expensive cost on bus which we actually paid for it to wait at the Klang Stadium for our signal to travel to KLIA.

When I realised it was too late to tour KL after their arrival, I decided to cancel it altogether and instructed President Feldman to bring them straight to Klang upon arrival.

Then another contingency slipped through my calculation: ALL their luggages were missing! They virtually have nothing except the clothing and underwear they were wearing. Houston, we have problem.

The next day morning we were going north to Ipoh and Cameron Highland. Malaysia Airline only promised to deliver their luggage to President Feldman’s house around noon. Should we wait till the luggage arrives? What if Malaysia Airline breaches their promises? Will we then waste more time waiting in Klang?

I could not afford to be indecisive.

If we go ahead as planned without the luggage, how do we solve the problems like lack of clothing, fresh underwear, toiletries etc? They are here in Malaysia for leisure not for military training!

Sensing that Malaysia Airline’s promises could not be trusted lightly (which later proven to be correct as the luggage was not delivered to President’s house as promised), we went to Ipoh despite the adversity.

So you just thought all the sudden turn of event were behind us, fresh challenge came… only this time it was life threatening…

Meeting this Thursday 5-4-2007

Dear all,

We will be having our club meeting this Thursday, 8pm at our office.

The speaker for the night will be none other than the mother to my daughter. First Lady Diana will be enlightening us about loans. I believe many of us would want to know about this subject, especially those who have started working. So please come in full force to this Thursday's meeting.

Also, still awaiting confirmation on Kwang Hwa's IU Day (7th April) & Salsa (12th April). I need confirmation on Kwang Hwa's by Wednesday and Salsa by the club meeting this Thursday. I hope I will not be disappointed.
